I have a 20 yr old Miele G572. I don't have the manual. I'm trying to fiqure out the softening dial that is inside on the washer wall. There are numbers 1 thru 5 that you set for water hardness. So if I have moderatly hard water, should I be setting this gauge toward 1 or 5?

Lately, it seems to be going thru a lot of salt compared to when I first started using it. I did note a cracked back flo dome (which I have ordered).

I'd...

....start on setting 3 and try that for a couple of cycles. If you think it is still not quite right, try 4....

...but to move to 5, your water would almost want to be able to take on Mike Tyson for hardness...

here is the manual

I extracted the page about that dial.

They say "2" is the default setting.
"1" is only for households with a softening system installed
For any other water hardness one should go to 3, 4, 5 and so on.
Exception: On the right side of the front panel, you find a little button that can be turned with a coin. Here you can permanently increase the water level. If you do so, the hardness dial should be one more notch up.

(See the table for different hardness values, d is German hardness degrees, fH should be international, ask your utility company)

You can download the complete zipped manual using the link (German only)

Hope this helps.

correction

Sorry, I made a mistake:

Setting 1 is for extremly soft water (having salt in the machine)
Setting 2 is the factory setting (default)
For houses with a softening unit (no water hardness) just use no salt at all.
