Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

solid tub

vintage solid tub-i'm guessing early 70s vintage, could be a real nice score!
probably old enough to have solenoid actuated spin instead of the reversing
motor(Ca.1975-80 solid tubs)

Tomorrow I will check them out. I hope the dryer opens with a foot pedal. Seller says they still work so maybe we'll do a load.
After looking at ads from the 70's this pair might be from 1977 or later. The knobs are arranged differently than the earlier ones.
Did SQ ever make a suds saver?

The Girls Are Home!

So, solid tub, the dryer drum is huge, the consoles light up (very cool!), a full range of wash selections Hooray! HW, HC, WW, WC, and CC! Alas, no foot pedal on the dryer.
Seller gave them away for $40. I almost feel guilty because even if they don't work I can part them out and come out ahead.
Washer Model ad 601w, have not checked dryer yet. I can't find any info on this model. It's a Speed Queen from Canada, the tag is torn but probably made in the US. Tomorrow I will inspect them further.

Very very very nice looking machines. Few things can compare to the wash action of these old queens. How did the water level switch work? Were these still timed fill?

Thank you!

They are home but not tucked in yet, I have yet to unload them. Winds were 40mph gusts today so I don't want to fight the wind. The yard is still soft but with any luck it might dry a little more and I can back the truck right up to the laundry porch and unload straight across with a ramp thus eliminating the off the truck up the stairs ordeal.
Have not had a chance to try them out. Seller could not hook them up. Every time I talked to them, not even negotiating, they kept knocking $20 off. Finally I just gave them $40 for the pair and ran. Had I stayed longer they might have been paying me!
Border guards thought I was nuts. "You went to Toronto for what?! Have anything else to declare?"
"Yes, a matching dryer!" (Big toothy grin.)
Guard rolled his eyes and waved me through.

Water Level

There is a small reservoir on the back of the tub.  As the washer fills a small amount is diverted into the reservoir starting the motor when it reaches the desired level.  There is no way to fill the tub manually and run the washer because the reservoir must have it's portion.

Old or Older

I have a vague idea how old they are but I can't find any info at all. Any guesses?
Mixfinder, good to know about the reservoir. I'll have to hook up the hose and test it before I drag it into the laundry room.

I am guessing, mid 70's, somewhere in the model year change, the knobs aren't all the same, on either model, the timer knob style on the washer tells me 76 to 79, but the watertemp/speed/level knobs tell me 70 to 75....and theres a mix on the dryer too!

but who cares......freakin beautiful.....wait until you see it fill.....I love the bubble/aireated fill, these might be reversing motor design.......you have to do a video

what the hell is there not to love about the whole set.....laundry room?......clutch the pearls.....these should be displayed proudly in the kitchen, if not in the living room in front of the TV.....and with lighted panels, D A Y U M ! ! !

Well, They Are Not Pink

So they won't match my 50's stove with pink metal trim but they make the $50 Roper look like the clodhopper it is. The only reason it was allowed in was because it was cheaper than a laundromat while I searched for the girls.
Lighted consoles, sigh. I know...aren't they just dreamy? And all the bells and whistles, too. Any setting, any temp, any level, any time. Perfect for someone with an authority complex. Just looking at the new washers in the showrooms was making me mad. How dare they tell me how much water and regulate how hot it could be! The nerve! And no peeking or error codes! Blah. I'll do laundry my way thank you very much.

I've often wondered if the ribbed design on my SQ fab softener is a nod to the agitator design on your machine...even if it's not, I'll pretend it is...lol.

WOW!

Man these are NICE!  Who wouldn't cross borders for a set like this?

I could PUKE from jealousy!

Is a SQ fab softener the dispenser that sits on the agitator?
My kids helped me with the video camera today but its not a very good picture. By the end of the week I hope to have the girls installed and upload a video.

Timed Fill

Earlier SQ's had a timed fill. I always had to set mine on med. or low fill to get a full tub of water. When your water pressure is higher you have to set for lower fill or you would wash all your soap away.

Girls Need TLC

Well, I think the washer needs a new belt. Smells like it and it quit agitating during the test run. No spin or drain. Off to remove the panels to check it out. Hopefully that's all it is.
