Older Speed Queen set

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I am guessing, mid 70's, somewhere in the model year change, the knobs aren't all the same, on either model, the timer knob style on the washer tells me 76 to 79, but the watertemp/speed/level knobs tell me 70 to 75....and theres a mix on the dryer too!

but who cares......freakin beautiful.....wait until you see it fill.....I love the bubble/aireated fill, these might be reversing motor design.......you have to do a video

what the hell is there not to love about the whole set.....laundry room?......clutch the pearls.....these should be displayed proudly in the kitchen, if not in the living room in front of the TV.....and with lighted panels, D A Y U M ! ! !

Well, They Are Not Pink

So they won't match my 50's stove with pink metal trim but they make the $50 Roper look like the clodhopper it is. The only reason it was allowed in was because it was cheaper than a laundromat while I searched for the girls.
Lighted consoles, sigh. I know...aren't they just dreamy? And all the bells and whistles, too. Any setting, any temp, any level, any time. Perfect for someone with an authority complex. Just looking at the new washers in the showrooms was making me mad. How dare they tell me how much water and regulate how hot it could be! The nerve! And no peeking or error codes! Blah. I'll do laundry my way thank you very much.

I've often wondered if the ribbed design on my SQ fab softener is a nod to the agitator design on your machine...even if it's not, I'll pretend it is...lol.

WOW!

Man these are NICE!  Who wouldn't cross borders for a set like this?

I could PUKE from jealousy!

Is a SQ fab softener the dispenser that sits on the agitator?
My kids helped me with the video camera today but its not a very good picture. By the end of the week I hope to have the girls installed and upload a video.

Timed Fill

Earlier SQ's had a timed fill. I always had to set mine on med. or low fill to get a full tub of water. When your water pressure is higher you have to set for lower fill or you would wash all your soap away.

Girls Need TLC

Well, I think the washer needs a new belt. Smells like it and it quit agitating during the test run. No spin or drain. Off to remove the panels to check it out. Hopefully that's all it is.

Now I'm not sure. The front belt turns, the one above does not and I did not see the third belt. I'll get the flashlight and check after dinner. It 'whirs' like it wants to go, but only the front belt does anything.

belts

looks like the lower belt drives the pump while the 2nd,upper groove on the
pump's pulley has a belt that drives the transmission for agitation.
the 3rd belt (on the fluid clutch) only runs when the motor reverses for
spin.Seems that a belt is loose or oily and is slipping.

Would that make it smoke?
Also, where does one find parts for these machines? Need a tub seal; it drips water from under the agitator. Not bad yet but it won't get better. I have been searching online but have found no parts, diagrams, schematics or manuals. Absolutely zero matches for this model #ad 601w. Were Canadian model numbers unique to Canada?
The pump seems to work, it pumped out the rest the tub. The agitator moves easily so maybe the tranny is still good. My Amana locked up when the tranny went bad.
Tomorrow in the sunshine I will look for part numbers to see what we find. Is Ebay the place to look for parts?

for parts....www.easyapplianceparts.com.....

they may not have all, but they did have a few parts for my SQ.....and their in Canada

if your model number does not work, or shows NLA or limited parts, let me know, I'll look up my model number for you.....underneath their all built the same....either banging solenoids or reversing motor

slipping belt could cause smoke or odor-is the big pulley on the transmission
turning?Mechanism appears to be the same as the u.s. version-with basic
origins dating to the 1950s if not earlier, this mechanism lasted through the
last solid tub SQs around 1980.
I have never looked for new parts for solid tub speed queens, but people here
should know of some good sources

Pump

You can loosen the pump to adjust belt tension between the pump and the transmission. Might be all it needs to get her running through the cycle again.

Thanks Magic Clean, many more parts and the diagrams look right.
The motor smokes a little. A friend and I looked at it today. He is an electrician and thinks that it should be fine, it may have been sitting a while. It does not smokes now and the motor is not hot after running through a couple of cycles. Have not tried it on gentle after the initial test but normal/fast works great.
There is a sticker on the drain tub stamped 1970, the other sticker states fill time determined by pressure.
Cfz, you are right about the belts. Definitely a reversing motor. The insides are much different than my 'old' washer (ca2003, haha).
Will work on video this weekend.
