Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

How I found, and the history

How did I find it? Craigslist

This belonged to the aunt of the seller who became too old to live alone and moved I to assisted living. She had this dryer since her husband bought it for her. No, she did not have the matching washer, as he recalled. I asked him to call me if he ever found one.

I cannot get good pics here in the house, so I will move it outside in the next day or two to get proper pics.

Door height

I distinctly remember 1-18 dryer ads that touted that the door could be opened and closed over the height of a laundry basket. I thought it strange that this was such an exciting development in laundry achievements. I guess it was for Frigidaire!

Great condition and wonderful find!

I've never seen these - cool find, it would be even cooler to find the washer.

PhilR -thanks so much for posting ads to see how these could look. You're the man for posting ads that help visualize the products in homes.

Wow Peter that is a super cool find! I don't remember even seeing one of those out on the Aberdeen Farm, and they had a lot of Frigidaire. Super rare, congratulations!

Love the "layout" in the ad they had posted with the laundry up on that decking above the dining area of the kitchen. I can only imagine the racket that machine would make while running and you're sitting under it while having Sunday brunch. Bet that hanging chandalier did a little jiggle to the whomp whomp of the washer. lol

I'm sure that ear plugs would have been necessary at the very least.

Wow!

Two straps or three is what I do to move a grand piano!
Wow!
It is a great find. Use it. These are great drying machines. My biggest complaint about using electric dryers where the over dryness. I found this vintage dryer was a very "soft" dryer. You should hook it up at the homestead. I think you would like it.
It is a beautiful find!

Cool Dryer, Peter

These were about as fancy as a Frigidaire dryer ever got, It has a 2 speed motor, a dual heating element, sprinkler system for dryer fires, no actually for damping clothing for ironing, Electronic dryness control [ made by Texas Instruments, same system as used on Lady Kenmore dryers in 1966-7 ] It also looks like it had a control behind the door to give you a no tumble setting.

FD dryers by this time had gotten fairly good overall, but were still no match for the reliability of WP & KM and GEs electric dryers and probably a few others. Weak spots in the FD dryers were the motor, front and rear drum bearings and slides, idler pulleys, and wiring in the heating element circuit.

I often said the good thing about a FD dryer was that their washers spun so well, usually a FD dryer paired with a FD washer lasted much longer that one that was paired with a BD WP-KM, GE-FF, WH FL washer etc.

In any event it is an awesome find Peter, I hope it is in as good a shape mechanically as it looks and you get to use it, there is still no beating the speed and size of a American dryer especially when used with a modern FAST spinning washer.

Multi-use appliances

Don S and I saw one of these, in green, at an old appliance shop in Toledo about ten years ago.  They were using it as a storage cabinet and on top, a TV stand.  We asked if he would consider selling it and the owner just stared at us a for a minute with a "but where would the TV go?" look on his face and politely declined.

Using it

The only real problem I have is the height of the dryer verses the (stuffed to the gills) built in shelves I have in the laundry room...

John Combo -- after that list of things that could go wrong, is there anything that could remain goof? LOL!!!

I find it strange that there are so few options that other dryers would have: temp selections, end-of-cycle signal, fabric settings... There are no other controls on the dryer other than what is pictured.

And the "storage cabinet"? Maybe a Harlequin Romance or two might fit in there, but the only product that would fit in there is maybe the thin boxes of ALL...

look who's making the scene.....

sorry for being late to the party but....

WOW!!!
CONGRATULATIONS on an OUTTA SIGHT find there PeterH770!!!
