One Combo Load To-Go Please

Well it will be awhile before this baby does any loads. But here she is, fresh from LA. Owned by an elderly woman who passed (Every one of the machines I find are from elderly ladies!!) I've never had a combo before, never really even seen one in person until the Tucson show, but now I have one of my own thanks to Robert.

So here she is, shes gonna be a beauty when I'm done with her. I've not plugged anything in, everything turns and nothing is rusted. So thats good I guess. First things first, this baby needs a bath, it is well, disgusting. Here are some pics of its trip down to San Diego...

works like a sieve

..it may work but I predict if so that it leaks like a sieve, most probably at both diverter valves, for starters. I say this because of the RUSTY base plate.
If it does need those, there is a modern replacement that you can use which makes them replaceable with a more reliable part than original.

It's a VERY cool find indeed and you're gonna have a lot of fun with it. The start button tells us it's one of the later ones made, probably from 1972, and it's nice that's it's gas.

There are 4 or 5 fellas here on the list who know the machine real well and should be able to help you with anything. But, out in the real world, there aren't too many service men that will touch them at all anymore.

Fortunately, as Bob said, the first WP Resource-Saver washers used a diverter valve and the Calypso did also. The new valves are much better than the old valves because all of the inside parts are plastic. The old valve had a pot metal flapper that got corroded and then broke off.

Does your door have the plastic square in the top center of the handle for the locking pin? That was the last indignity visited upon the Kenmore Combo before production was halted. The door locked when you pushed the start button. Fortunately it was not a thermal switch in the one we played with so it unlocked as soon as the dial was pushed in to stop the machine.

This machine offered wrinkle guard which tumbled the clothes for a brief period every few minutes after the dry period ended. The TRUE ENZYME PRE-SOAK in this machine uses the Wrinkle Guard timer to enable a long soak cycle with periodic tumbling so it is a far more sophisticated soaking operation than the 4 minute Super Wash that was renamed Enzyme Super Wash.

Each color in this series had a control panel done in the same colors, so the harvest and avocado machines had control panel patterns and markings in lighter and darker shades of the color of the cabinet.

I hope someone clued you in (or you opened the lower panel and read the instructions) about turning the balance system screw before moving the machine. I also hope that you have a lot of fun with the combo.

Congrats!! Important: Balance Mechanism

Hi. Congrats on your find. Truly a rare machine (especially in gas)....this one is from 70's (it has the Push to Start button). Are you very familiar with this machine? I have a fairly extensive knowledge of this model & will be glad to provide you with any reference help you might need. One question: did you loosen the balance mehchanism locking screw before you moved it? If not, before you operate it you will have to loosen & re-tighten this lock nut. It is behind the lower access panel.

Thanks for the info, I believe someone told me about the lock nut but absent minded me didn't losen it before its journey, but for that matter I doubt the father of the girl who inherited it did either! No biggie, its in the de-gunk-ification process now and hasn't been plugged in yet. I will be sure and loosen and tighen this screw before startin her up.

Good luck with it ,they sure wash nice and this is the only Combo to have all three dispensers onboard. A big over site at Bendix!!

I was told and its true the belt for the blower fan can be replaced by a Hoover Power head belt. Its round in cross section.

I have the late gas model 69 or 70 I think I never checked that. It has the copperleaf backsplash instead of color.
