I've floated a trial balloon on this stove before and no one was interested. Now it's crunch (hopefully not CRUSH) time. We are settling Mom's estate and this stove that faithfully served her for nearly 60 years needs a new home. She may be a plain-Jane model and not flashy enough for a lot of members' taste but everything works, breaks in the deep well coil have been twisted back together and it's functioning for the time being. Original coil is still intact & working for the broiler, the oven element has been replaced a couple of times--my mom was an avid baker. Spring that holds the oven door slightly open for broiling snapped many years ago. I have a couple of spares for the 6" burners but am pretty sure at least one of them has a bad outer coil. It's a single oven with storage/warmer drawer on the other side. I have the original booklet that came with the stove and there may be other literature we come across as we sort through things. I'll let this stove go for free if it means it will be saved. The estate sale guy said he could maybe get $100 for it, and that wouldn't guarantee that it wouldn't meet up with some sort of destructive fate. So please, if anyone is interested and has the room, help me sleep at night knowing I did the right thing by Mom.

Thanks,

Ralph

P.S.

No need to suggest the Westinghouse museum. I've already been down that road and they were not interested.

I think it's beautiful and if

I had the place for it, it would be so mine.
But I don't. Hmm, you might get a note from a friend of mine who has a '53 and might like the parts if you have some and there's nobody who more desperately needs them -

Wow

That would look great in my kitchen but you're on the other side of the country. Calif. is a long way from Georgia. I wish you were a good bit closer, I would love to have that stove!

I could see that unit in my kitchen instead of the 2006 ceramic top.

Greg,

I hope you will forgive my forwardness here, but there might be a solution:
Why don't you and your partner fly out to California next week, get married, rend a small van or U-Haul and bring it back as your wedding present/honeymoon?

The cost

of gasoline.....

And there is no way we could both get our supervisor at the office to approve the time off. She hates it that she can't hold it against us that we are parnters. Since we are not legally recognized she has to treat us as individuals and not a couple. It's nice to turn the tide and use thier own rules again the system!

California is a long way off. The gasoline cost alone would be cost prohibitive. I have emailed Ralph to see if it really is in California. I am in hope that it may be closer.

Well Greg, I got your e-mail and replied before checking the board here.

The stove is here in California.

By the way, the model is E64-49 for anyone else who might be interested.

Keven, I'd hate to see this reliable gem become a parts stove but I do know parts, especially the range burners, are pretty much impossible to come by. I would much prefer that the stove continue to serve an appreciative 2nd owner indefinitely into the future, and I know you would too. We'll see how this unfolds.

Also forgot to advise it's 38" wide, kind of an oddball dimension but actually only about 3/4" less than the classic double-oven O'Keefe & Merrit (so called) 40" model of similar vintage. Standard depth, and the two bottom drawers are also storage.

Giving this a bump in case people missed it over the weekend and it has dropped down too far on the list.

Would it help if I threw in a Westy mixer of the same vintage?

You are

killing me. Not only is the cost for getting it to Ga. not in the budget now a mixer too!!

Thanks for your email, I got back to Atlanta this morning.

We had a tree fall at the house in Sparta. Two power poles went with it. Thank God it all missed the house. The cost of getting things back in place definately rules me out for this treasure. To bad. I hope this finds a loving home that will give it the care and attention it deserves.

And many Thanks for your reply Ralph.

Greg

I'd much rather see her saved, too -

Was just thinking practically.
Hmm, I wonder - do you suppose we could organize a relay here? Perhaps move her across country over time. Seems like there are enough of us in a more or less straight (careful; them there's fighten' words, padner) line to do it.
I'd have to talk to my honey first, obviously I don't have storage space available, but I wouldn't mind driving a stretch of the way. Just a thought...
Actually, it might be a neat project to see if we could do it.
Greg, if you really want it, and I'm there when it goes by me, I'll be happy to help.
My location in the US is on the Southeastern most/Northeastern most Wyoming/Colorado border. Be there a few months this summer.

Admirable community spirit

Keven. Ralph has to get moving however. And I would not put him in that position. The right stove will come my way when it's meant to be. We need to find a place for this one so Ralph can move on and put this task behind him. Thanks Keven and Ralph for the thoughtful responces.

Greg

P.S. anybody got an extra chainsaw? Gee, those folks at Ga. Power get testy when you knock down a couple of power poles.

Well Greg, sorry to hear about your tree mishap but at least the house is OK. I hope it isn't one that was strategically placed and that you will really miss.

The relay sounds fun. I'm willing to work something out. The stove can go into storage (by its total basket case Laundromat counterpart of same vintage--also up for grabs) behind the shop in the garage. The guy who will run the estate sale says house and garage will be EMPTY when he's done (yay!) so there will be room to store the stove for a while, but I will need to advise him that the stove isn't to be included, and soon. So the sooner something can be worked out the better.

Greg and Keven, thanks for your dedication to the continued well being of this faithful companion to my mom for so many years. I will understand if things don't pan out. Trust me, after cleaning out the master bedroom, the entire downstairs, huge attic and basement (a good amount of it just recyclable junk), I am willing to allow what will be to be. I've had to become a hardened detacher to successfully sort through things but will do what I can to place the stove before sending it off to an unknown fate.

Keven, you might be pleased to know it turned out a nice roast pork & sauerkraut dinner tonight, done to perfection just like mom used to, only tonight my sister was at the helm. Nicely paired with ice cold Mexican beer.

So let's see if we can pull this off and get this stove to Greg somehow. Feel free to e-mail me directly but I'm fine with getting this thread bumped back to the top once in a while too.

I'm game - but it's up to Greg.

And we'd need several folks to chip in their help. Greg? Firm ja oder nein?
(Sauerkraut, Kartoffeln und Schweinebraten. Klar, dazu pass nur ein Bier!)
I've always wondered where the Mexicans learned to brew such good beer and why their food is so enormously good. In a lot of ways, the real Mexican cuisine is heads above most European stuff...

I know, Keven. It seems you and Greg are the only two on the board who are interested in the stove so a relay may not be in the cards. With the cost of gasoline now, it's not like the stove justifies a special trip.

As I said, I'd be willing to store it and hang on to it while an interested party works out logistics but will need to advise the estate sale guy. He is tentatively set to start his two-weeks of organizing things on 6/30, so if we come up with a plan before then I can pull the stove from the inventory.

Keven, you are so right about Mexican cuisine. My partner is Mexican and his mom turns out some great food. Nothing like the overly hot & spicy stuff that swims in red sauce so many people equate with Mexican. Although every year she cans a batch of killer salsa with tomatoes and peppers from her garden, it is always on the side as a condiment, not covering the main dish. Ever since she found out how much I love her chile con carne, which is literally exactly that and has no resemblance to anything out of a can, she cooks some up when she know I'm coming. Hmmmm . . . Sacramento is calling to me now!

The great stove relay...

I could possibly provide a safe stopping point here in Reno on it's journey. Perhaps we could document it's voyage along with the people who help it along. THAT would be neat reading/viewing for posting on this site...

I am

checking freight rates now to see what the trucking cost is from Ca. to Ga. will be. Getting it to Atlanta would be the best thing. I know Sparta is out of the question. I can pick it up in Atlanta and get it home from there. I have sent Ralph an email to let him know where I am on this.

Received Greg's e-mail and have replied. Hoping for the best. Thanks Drew for your offer. I'm sensing a sort of California Missions routine where the stove travels for a day at a time before making another overnight stop on its way to Greg's. Definitely would be fun to document the journey. Fringe IFC material in the making! My sister's in the film industry. I should ask her what she thinks!
