At least they didn't describe the age using the ubiquitous phrase: "from the 1950s"

As others have correctly noted, this is mid 80s. The brown door seals and rectangle GE logo plate era.

May have been part of a series that GE made with bad compressors.

as with most idiots on CL....its not a matter of the real factor of how old the appliance actually is...

they go by how long THEY actually owned it...

in that kind of reasoning, a machine I picked up off the road a week ago should actually be under its first years warranty....yet its 10 years old...

you know, like 40 is the new 10!...
