Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

possibly BD?

the top of the washer sure looks DD,but looks like there is a spec tag at LH bottom of washer-possibly the earliest DDs had that?-my oldest DD is an '84 with tag under lid.

I don't think this washer is DD

For 3 reasons.
1. I don't know of a DD KM that ever had the model/serial tag on the front left bottom of the cabinet.
2. I don't see the screws at the bottom of the control panel which were common in DD plastic tops.
3. This has the same size lid as my absolute BOL 1981 KM. A DD should have a larger lid.
If I'm wrong Gordon please set me right.

Timer

The timer pointer is the give away.  Belt drive!

This was really nice of you

Aloha I am new here. Spent all night reading one thread trying to figure out HOW to go about buying a wash machine HERE ON THE BIG island where we only have 2 choices. Sears and Home Depot.
I sure have gotten an education too! Reading site after site, review after review, post after post.
I think it was really nice of you to put this pic and post in here for someone.
I am in Hawai'i ( a big problem in itself and a bigger problem being on The Big Island) so it can't help me. But I'll bet it does help someone or already has.
Belt drive, OK at least you CAN replace those! My Kenmore just died the spring broke that makes the spin go past slow (1st gear). No fan belt on it, got it new in 2004. Liked it because it had the 2nd rinse and was the Extra Large Capacity PLUS. The whole machine housing has rusted out ( we live only 4 roads from the ocean) the salt air is murder on these and anything electrical too. No more microwave, coffee maker (Mr. Coffee) broke the other day too!
So what to do? Isn't that the BILLION dollar question?
I have come to the conclusion to do with a Samsung that is a front loader. It has the steam and all.
My biggest peave was the locked lids on the others and the HE (terrible reviews).
Not sure it the new one I am looking to buy today (Thanksgivings Black Friday on Thursday now) has the HE doesn't say so. But from what everything I have read the front loaders just don't use as much water anyway. So. . . not sure the HE is even relevant.
I even looked on Craigs list for not only our island but Oahu (where Honolulu) is and the majority of the people and there were only 3 Samsungs for sale out of the hundreds of others (all other makes!)
Is MRB627 (Malcom) or appnut people that could also shed some light on this decision of mine? We leave to go in just a couple of hrs.
Aloha Antoinette

Why won't you consider a Whirlpool or Maytag frontloader?  (all frontloaders are considered high efficiency washers).  Other than "steam and all" what else is your reasoning for leaning toward the Samsung?  I perosnally just odn't think their products are of good quality.

Aloha Appnutt

Aloha Appnutt;

We don't have the choices to have a Whirlpool or Maytag front loader here.
There is this Samsung or the Kenmore and there were 110 reviews of the Kenmore and 75% of them were ones on a scale from 1-5. Which means all bad comments.
Home Depot might have a Maytag or Whirlpool in a front loader, but they do not have lay away, and their stock is SO limited. This one or the Kenmore one are on this "Black Friday" Thursday night sale.
What do you mean by not of good quality? Can you elaborate more? Any experience with Samsung owners or units?
Thank you very much,
Antoinette

Agreed, BD

Yes, I too think this is a belt-drive. I do not believe there was ever an exact clone of this model in a direct drive, as there were some of the other models. As Eddie says, the dark control panel is the clincher for me on that, other than the size of the lid. The panel is a dark walnut brown according to the Sears catalogs, and they came out as 1982 models in 24" and in large capacity 29" models. These sold quite well during the early 1980s recession, though oddly the 29" version was considerably less expensive than the 24".

Austin put up videos on YouTube of his machine. He enjoyed swapping agitators on his, though these never came with a Roto-Swirl from the factory. The video is called "Baby Kenmo" if you're interested in watching.

There was a very popular DD version of this machine, however its panel was in the more common for DD, Ivory with ebony insert. Later 1980s and 1990s models made extensive use of this dark console, once the black rubber knobs debuted.

I don't know about the knob pointer though, I think those were just like the BDs for the first couple years until Whirlpool engineered the de-clutch timers and put the plastic sleeves with no pointer on the DD's timer skirt to prevent it being advanced during operation.

What we ended up buying

Aloha everyone. Well we went to that crazy Black Friday which was at 8:00pm on Thursday Night. Never ever seen so many people on this whole island. It was amazing.
Hard for me as I am truly disabled. Anyway the Samsung was not allowed to be purchased on the 12 week layaway. So we ended up paying more instead of $649 we paid $699 for a Kenmore Steam Front Load with what seemed like 100 buttons. I don't know if I can even figure out how to use it. I have 12 weeks to learn if I can find it on the internet. Here it is: It was orig $1300 and we got it for $699 Hawai'i's "sale" price.
http://www.priceviewer.com/sears/52...t-load-Washer---Metallic-Silver-[MODEL-41373]

The sales manager claims that the "NEW" Sears washers are made by LG he said they have the new contract. That the "old" contract was with Whirlpool. Is this correct? Everything I have read on line here says it is now Whirlpool who makes Kenmores. Is that now "Old" news? He also claimed that this washer was a lot better than the Samsung Steam Front Loader that they also had on sale.
Thank you,
Antoinette
