We have a thing called Washington Consumers Checkbook in which members of the organization rate products and services they have personally experienced and used. Commercial enterprises cannot buy ads or place ratings, unlike Angie's List. John and Jeff's businesses always get top ratings, but their longtime customers warn them that they are giving them the best rating but don't want to have to wait longer for service when they get new customers. I consulted it and found a supplier/installer with a 100% rating for satisfaction from everyone who had used him. I looked this up a week ago and printed out the information but sort of forgot to call him. Yesterday afternoon, I was watching a National Geographic program about people who rescue animals and as a person went through their front door, I suddenly thought to call about the door. The company is located in Silver Spring, a few miles from here, but when the man answered the phone, he was here in Beltsville so he came over. I told him I wanted his best door. He had the ProVia brochure and turned to the Decorator line of full view storm doors. On my front porch, I chose the finish and latch with his input. He told me he was going back to his office and within two hours would email me his proposal, which he did. It was so great to know I was getting the best company without having to bother with shopping around. I accepted his proposal and he has ordered the door because all ProVia doors are custom made. It should be installed sometime in December. I am so happy that I got this done.

We did a similar thing with a local place where we've had good work done on our garage doors before. We had a Larson which had a fiberboard bottom panel which attracted water and swelled...our across-the-driveway neighbor had gotten one from Lowes which was OK, but we wanted to go with the local place. We were able to get one that is made locally (actually factory is about 2 miles from here) which harmonized really well with the one on the neighbor's (wanted to make sure we had similar proportions, which we didn't with the old one). I don't like the hardware which we chose (picked it out of the catalog--oops) but it's sturdy and will last us awhile.

While I was on a roll, I finally ordered a Baldwin Brass replacement mail slot cover on Friday. For years I have wanted one with an inside flap to better seal out the weather and give the inside of the door a more finished look. It is supposed to be delivered today.
