Think your right about the smell, but I can't stand the smell of Gain either. Somethings not right if I have to air out the boxes so that they can be tolerated. What the hell is in it?

Thought this was a kind of "earth friendly" product being that it comes from Europe?
I'm going to use it and see, but so far I'm with Hunter on this, they need to cut the scent back, or offer a unscented version.

Some people cant stand the smell of Fels Naptha, but for some reason it dosn't bother me ( sensory perception I guess)

Having used all sorts of detergents from all over the world, it does come down to personal preference.

I find the formulas that are cold water specific to be very highly scented and generally those from P&G. Persil, either German or British, along with other Levers products I find tend to be more lightly scented and to not leave a powerful perfume on clothes.

They also tend to rinse out well in machines that I have owned.

If I was close, I'd offer to take that Persil off your hands in the knowledge that it is one of the best detergents on the market anywhere....

By the way...

...Persil has reduced the amount of powder/Megaperls and gel that is in the boxes. So you will find just 16 loads instead of 18 before in a Megaperls box.

@passatdoc: I don't know if your theory with Ariel would be as you described. The reason is that we have so many discount brand detergents over here and they are not bad at all. They are really a problem to brand detergents like Ariel or Persil over here. So if the wouldn't be Ariel, I think Persil could not raise the prices as they wish as many consumers would switch to cheaper detergents from Aldi, Lidl etc.

Scent

I think it takes some getting use to, on my third load (whites) noticed that the smell goes away (I think) after clothes are dry?
Is the dosing about 1/2 cup for full load, or is that too much?
What I have is the Universal Powder, not the one for colors. And I have a top loader machine.

Stan, I'm surprised you would spend the money on Persil for a toploader. I know it's your money, etc. but it was made for front loaders where controlled sudsing is important and where you don't have to use so much so it's not quite so terribly expensive to use. If the half cupful makes the water feel slippery, you are using enough.

2 More Loads

Well, I washed 2 more loads in Persil over the weekend. While the results were good, I don't think the beat Tide HE in cleaning ability. I'll continue to use it until it is gone, but frankly, for about half the price, the Tide is a better detergent...IMO.

I can't handle

this stuff
Tom your right, figured this out on the third load!
The smell dose Not go away, even with a second rinse or after drying. Even though there was no sudsing during wash, I noticed sudsing with both rinses!

The bathrobe that had been washed with this, held on to the scent, and after I took it off (me) it left the scent on my skin! Had to re wash to get it out. also rinsed twice.

Knew this was for FL machines, but thought it was O.K for TL too, NOPE! I did not think it cleaned any better than if I had used phosphated Foca, and did not rinse as well as Foca, at least not in my TL.
This is definitely for FL ONLY, where the dosing can be reduced, and machine dose more than two rinses, IMHO

Have to sent the unopened boxes back, or find someone around here that has a HE FL

Well I'd Offer To Swap The Persil For Soaps In My Stash

But the cost is so dear would have to clear out most of my stash! *LOL*

Yes, the scent of Persil can linger long after items are dried either by machine or line. Unilever and Henkel just as with P&G have this idea in their heads that consumers want scent so deeply inbedded into their wash as to last years when stored away.

Henkel used to make an unscented version of Persil (Sensitive)but years ago some darn fool decided to mess with it, so now ever that has the same sort of lingering scent.

Using Persil in a TL washer is going to be tricky because at the proper amounts for soil levels and amount of water used the scent may be too powerful. I've used about 2 tablespoons to 1/4 cup in the Miele of Megaperls Sensitive (depending upon load size and soil levels), sometimes lowering the dose and adding STPP, but still the scent lingers.

Persil Compared to Tide:

Welcome to my world! *LOL*

How long have I been saying there isn't anything overly special about Persil compared to Tide? That product especially the new versions are pretty much equal if not better than Persil (Henkel). This shouldn't come as a surprise as P&G sells Ariel and other TOL "HE" detergents all over the UK and EU that in many cases rate higher than Persil (Henkel) in consumer magazine testing. P&G probably finally got wise to it's self and incorporated some of that across the pond knowledge to make a decent "HE" detergent. Am willing to bet the elusive new Tide With Bleach (HE) would beat Persil or at least equal the results.

I believe there are some differences. Maybe it's the oxygen bleach in Persil that helps it really clean at higher temps. Then again, an equal amount of TIDE he with stpp & oxygen bleach over many attempts did not knock the underarm staining out of the old undershirts like Persil after two uses. The marks were hardly noticeable after the first Persil wash and totally removed after the second. I think powerful cleaning at high (180F+) temps is one place where the product really excels. Also, while it may suds up by the end of the wash period, it is amazing how quickly the suds break down so that there is no suds locking during the first spin, even with heavy towels. Tide cannot match that. Persil does so well that my bath sheets in the SQ don't need a 4th rinse because it can spin so well right after the wash. When that pump snaps on after each spin period, water gushes out and it's not sudsy water either. Tonight with a scant two TBS of Persil and an equal amt of stpp, there was hardly any sudsing in the first rinse and none at all in the next two althought there was suds in the wash. I think these two perforance factors cannot be faked or imagined. I think TIDE he is a great detergent, but Persil is just a notch above TIDE for great handling of extreme loads in front loaders.

As for the smell, the package sits open and the smell has dissipated to where you cannot smell the Persil perfume in the textiles after the loads are dried. I just checked the bath sheets I washed and dried this afternoon and the dried items have no smell at all.

The sudsing in the rinses you experienced, Stan, might have been residue from your previous detergent being brought out of the robe.

Tom

I thought the same thing, about possible residue! But this is also a claim that Charlie's Soap has made regarding their product? Who knows, maybe.

I must agree with Laundress, in that personally I did not find it to be "overly special" either. and for me and my TL, the dosing IS tricky. If I had been using plain old "original" Tide I'd been fine.

As I said up thread there is a sensory perception I have of this, and I aint liking it LOL

Its not that I'm opposed to some scent in a laundry detergent/soap, but this is over the top, and something is wrong if you have to open the boxes to allow the scent to disperse before using, to me that just says "Too Much" was put in the first place! and total unnecessary. To me nothing smelsl cleaner than a very lightly scented product, or No scent, thats been washed and hung out! It dose not need more than that!

Laundress if you following, I'l try again to Email you, Im not a upgraded member, so I don't think I can member message you? You can Email me if you wish, regarding the Fels and such.

Hmm...... sorry to hear this...I use Persil Megaperls for whites and don't have any left over scent in the clothes at all. Sometimes I use 3 rinses but mostly only 2 and there is not scent. I find that Tide seems to leave my clothes stiff even with using fabric softener.

Did you use regular Persil or the Megaperls formula?

Hi Jerrod

It was the Universal Powder, not the Megaperls. I believe its for whites.
It just requires too much to be used in my TL. As a said up thread "This is really for FL only " IMHO

@Laundress: you may be right about today's Tide HE powder approaching or equaling Persil. I wouldn't know because I tend to buy in bulk when I see it on sale...as a result, I have six or more boxes of Gain and Tide HE sitting on the garage shelves!!! It will take me several years to use them up, and they must be 2-3 years old already, so the most recent Tide HE I have tried is the 2008 version, or earlier!! Add that to the fact that I have two packets of Persil Megaperls, half of a large carton of Via (Swedish Unilever Persil), and four small boxes of UK Ariel (all either brought by friends visiting Germany or purchased by me in UK or Sweden), it may be another few years before I have any reason to buy a new box of Tide HE!!

@mrwash: you may be right, though a lot of friends my age in Germany will wash with Persil and nothing else. Why? Because that's how Mutti did it. And they still wash underwear and linens at 80-90C. Why? Because that is how Mutti did it. They will never change, but I see your point about younger generations not being married to Persil.

A little example about how we are slaves to high Miele prices here. I own a Miele S5 canister vacuum cleaner. I have a mixture of hard floors and carpet (about half of the house has hard floors, half of the house has carpet). European vacuum cleaners are wonderful on hard floors and have terrific cleaning accessories. Last night I used the Miele crevice tool to clean out the lint trap on the dryer (beneath the drum). The one place where they don't do so well is with carpets. I believe this is the reason why Miele recently introduced an entire new line of upright vacuums in the USA (S7 series) that still can operate all of the wonderful Miele attachments.

My Miele is ten years old. Still works fine, I have it serviced every 2-3 years and am told they will last 30 years if cared for properly. The vacuum came with the SEB-217 powerhead for carpet. It does a reasonably good job on my carpet, but no better than my old upright Hoover machine (but carpet is the ONLY thing that the Hoover did better). Miele has now introduced several updated, more powerful powerheads with height adjustments, headlights, etc., that perform much better than the SEB-217 in reviews. You can buy this device in Germany on Amazon for 107 Euros, which I presume includes tax and shipping.

http://www.amazon.de/Miele-3427131-SEB-236-Elektrob%C3%BCrste/dp/B000A32LI6/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335365179&sr=8-1-fkmr0

Or you can buy it in USA for $259:

http://www.amazon.com/Miele-SEB-Electro-Premium-Powerbrush/dp/B0058OILBS/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1335365305&sr=8-4

The Amazon price is the full standard US price, though it does include shipping and no sales tax because it is being shipped across state borders (if you live inside the state in which partner "BanksVac" is located, you will pay that state's sales tax on top of $259). If I buy it in a Miele store here in California, I would likewise pay the standard $259 plus 7.75% sales tax. So this upgrade will wait until my next trip to Germany, and I'll simply order it from Amazon.de and have it shipped to the home of friends prior to my arrival. I know of people who buy Miele vacuum bags and other accessories while visiting in Germany because to us it's virtually "free": when you can buy the product in Germany for only 40-50% of what one pays in USA, why not? They don't weigh a lot and won't push one's luggage over the weight limit. Before a trip to Germany, I order what I want from Amazon.de and have it shipped to a friend's house near Köln (and they no longer think the behavior is odd, once they learned that all of the purchases would cost double or more in USA).

Anyway, this is an example of how Miele controls prices over here. The prices for Persil, which is sold through the Miele store network here, is even worse. No one in Germany would pay the prices we pay here for it. Actually, I don't pay those prices either. Either I buy it in Germany, or else I make do with American detergents. As Laundress pointed out, the quality is increasing, and if Proctor and Gamble can make a decent detergent (Ariel) in Germany, they can do so here. The majority of existing machines in USA are still top loading, but of machines currently being sold, front loaders have the majority. So with time a majority of machines in US homes will be front loading. At that point there will be more competition and quality as the demand rises.

Love the Stuff!

It was a different conversation on here that prompted me to try it. I bought it through ABT.com and loved it. I bought the liquid Persil Power Gel (Anti-Greying Formula) and loved it! I've tried the powedered version of it and I did like it but the liquid is the best for me. ABT stopped selling my favorite version and I've been buying it from betterproductsonline.com. It's also available through amazon.com.

I love this stuff. It does a great job and for hard water places like Phoenix, it's great. I love the Vernel Day by the Sea softner and it's been great for me. It's not the cheapest but I don't have to use much of it and it does last for a long time. It's too bad the Henkel here in Scottsdale couldn't make some batches instead of ordering it from everywhere else, but they're making the old Dial like of stuff.

I know that some people think it's too scented but I really think it's pretty mellow compared to some of the stuff I've tried.

PU!

Stan and I did a swap on the Persil detergent (thank you very much,Stan), and am here to tell you this stuff packs quite a whiff! Was quite bowled over upon opening the box.

Even though Stan placed the boxes in separate ZipLoc bags the stuff still scented the entire box during transit. Stuff is saying back in the box and will be sealed to keep from giving one migraines. *LOL*

Wow I have not used the regular Persil since 2003 only the Megaperls so I guess I will stick with that. I have a front loader so I understand that things might not work the same in a TL with this stuff. Thing is that my Megaperls has scent in the container but doesn't seem to have it in the water as the washer drains in the laundry sink - maybe I am just too dirty.

Every now and then I will try one of the current formulations of Tide. Been using a bottle of Free and Clear liquid and it does a good job and it rinses much better than former Tide formulations, but it does leave some clothes hard and it contains optical brighteners so I don't like using it on colored loads and I only have one white load per week.

I just tried Purex triple action liquid and it performed almost as well as liquid Tide and costs dollars less...so don't know what to make of that.

Would like to try powdered Tide He with Bleach but cannot find this anywhere I look.

Seems like powdered Tide HE with Bleach is limited in distribution, I wonder if it will continue to be available?
I have tried the sample of Purex Triple Action and it worked well for me considering I have no luck with liquids. If it is working for you and it is dollars less try it for a bit and see where it takes you we have yet to see it on shelves so it is a wait for it's arrival in full size.

Just To Give You An Idea Of How Stinky This Persil Is

Before sealing the box removed and packing paper used inside. The brown paper was so impregnated with the scent from the boxes of Persil you could have used them as air fresheners! They went into the recycling bin pronto. *LOL*

Mind you Stan placed each of the boxes in Zip-lock bags, so the scent had to leech out of the boxes, through the plastic and into the paper. That is some strong perfume.

Just off the top of my head remember seeing this Persil is labeled "Universal" on the box and says "Fresh New Scent" amoung other things. Maybe this is a type of Persil produced for sale elsewhere besides Germany? Have never smelled anything like this powerful scent before with Persil. It's almost like a strong man's cologne.

I thought the same thing!

but having never used before, I thought it was " the norm" One member up thread suggested letting them "air out" but just could'nt imagine having to open the boxes, and set outside somewhere, for who knows how long, just to be able to tolerate!

Is it possible that these are the "fresh new" fragrance as opposed to what ever scent may have been used before ?? Or has Persil always had this scent, and this powerful?? Or is this a freak batch??

Another member up thread said that Persil was "not stronger smelling than Gain or some versions of Tide" Well Laundress and I are here to testify that these boxes most certainly are!

Laundress, I wonder if you could set a open box outside and see if it dissipates?
They'd probably work really well to keep deer away *LOL*
