Just packed away that box of Persil so won't be trying it out for awhile to see how the scent fares after laundering/drying.
Will keep you in mind though, you never know.

Can anyone post a pic of this "New" boxed Persil??, and is it the German Henkel version...unless its a radical new scent cant imagine how it would be overpowering!! Persil UK is o lighter gentle scent, less than UK Ariel and certainly a lot less than Tide & Foca products I`ve used....

I'm confident that Laundress will get to the bottom of this, now that she has it in hand, and in time will find out why it's so heavily scented, and if a smaller dose in a modern front loader is what's necessary for this (very complex) detergent to work the way it was intended to.

Back in 2008 Henkel released a press statement saying Persil was "new and improved" in terms of performance and sustainability.
Long story short all Persil versions were designed to work in cold (20c)water, and use less in terms of production and packaging. This must be when the scent was changed. Boxes of Persil in my stash are >5 years old and really haven't bothered looking since they arrived.
There may also be the fact that Miele has played some role in the product that ships to North America. Since they are the sole distributor of the market from Canada to Mexico perhaps they gave input being such a "good" customer.
I do remember the Persil powder from years ago and it smelled nothing like what Stan sent. It was a light "detergenty" scent, not at all unpleasant or offensive.
It might be worth a try to see if any of the Miele dealers have old stock lying about of Persil before the switch over.

One of our members in Germany (MrWash) quotes "German Persil's scent is quite light in comparison to other detergents scent"
As we say scent is very subjective and you stick with what you like, in terms of synthetic detergents over the years all are constantly being refined, but what I dont understand is normal foaming TIDE for top Loaders (with enzymes / bleach) etc is it so different from HE...except for low / no foam - the irony in that is that when the base powder is being manufacturerd they actually put sudz IN the TL formula NOT take it OUT.... I do understand that TL formula will have to work quickly wheras the FL will have a longer profile wash action..
Hi Stan, what you need is Persil handwash & twintub for your wringer machines, but then you`ll be rinsing forever....what we actually find is using twintubs and wringers now is that low foaming or HE powder is best as you dont need to rinse as much!!
Nowthen, one of our members bought a "Bucket of Kirkland" from costco, now that stuffs a wreeker for sure - would you say that the Persil smells stronger than that stuff!!

I have never used the Kirkland, but I feel safe in saying that I know that I have never smelled the likes of this in any detergent.
It is the most powerful I've come across!
After receiving them, I had the same reaction as Laundress did, and was not able to stand to have them in my laundry room. Every time I walked in, the scent was... well like she said, a "strong mens cologne" after half a day I couldn't take it anymore, so I put each box into a ziplock bag to reduce the scent level in the room, and thats where they stayed until they left me, and landed with her.
I know this sounds as though it's someone being overly sensitive, but really Mike, they are that strong!

For the most part laundry product offerings on both sides of the pond are trending towards powerful and long lasting scents. This is at least what one is seeing and could be why there is a growing market for that homemade "glob" made from soap.
At least here in the United States we do have Tide and Downy unscented detergent and fabric softener, OTHO on the otherside of the pond things seem quite different. Walking down any laundry product aisle in a French supermarket quite bowls one over these days.
Like many of us here one has a decent "vintage" detergent stash and one wonders why P&G,Unilever/Lever Bros.,Henkel, and the rest of that lot strayed from the classic fresh scents of the past. The above boxes look like mine except mine says Megaperls which are small beads instead of powder, but the box does state that it works in 20C water. Bought my box over a year ago and emptied it into a tub with a lid. Even now when I open the lid the scent rushes out. Thing is that there is no smell in the wash water or in the clothes at the end. This seems to be unlike powdered Tide which gives off a fragrance when opened but also in the wash water and then the entire laundry smells of it. Everyone is different in that I don't like the smell of powdered Tide in the wash water and then overtaking the entire laundry area.

I have wondered if strong perfume isn't partly "desirable" from the view of the laundry detergent companies in that it will cover up almost any off scent on clothes caused by poor laundry practices. A person may do a sloppy job with tap cold (upper 30s, even) wash, and be deluded that his or her clothes are fresh and clean because of the strong scent the detergent leaves behind.

Mike from what I remember of the scent your boxes of Tide with Bleach powder its a similar scent but TWB is less powerful on the nose. Putting that into somekind of order of strong stinky to weak/almost non existant on a scale of 1 to 10 is:

Tide Liquid mountain fresh/Regular Tide liquid (USA) 2
German Persil Henkel Universal/German Ariel 1

Did a few loads of bed linens in the Miele using a box of the vintage Persil "59" from my stash. Have to say the results were wonderful. Such a fresh clean scent was left behind. One would almost say there isn't a scent at all, but rather what laundry should smell like after wash day; clean and crisp.
As one's German isn't up to snuff could only guess at the dosages. Could barely make out *6* tablespoons or some such, so decided to wing it. In the end used 1/4 cup for a full load in the Miele which uses about 5 or so gallons of water for a normal wash of 11lbs.

But think this side of the box says to use entire contents for one wash load. Oh yes like that will happen in the Miele. Would have more froth than a bubble bath.

Morning Launderess, was there any aroma from the boxes at all??, I find the scent is the first thing to go with any vintage washing powder,
