Diffrence...

Hello Rich, wouldnt it be easier if there was just one pack does all I say, heres a very simplistic view...LOl

Persil Powder = Standard Fine Grain Powder with bleaching agents

Persil Universal Powder = Fine Grain Powder that can be used across a variety of fabrics and colours

Persil Universal Megaperls Detergent = Larger Grains or "Beads" hence Pearls of Detergent for universal fabric types & wash temps

Persil Megaperls Detergent = Larger Grains or "Beads" usually for whites / Lites

Universal - usually denotes it can be used across all wash temps 20 - 90 and whites lites and darks that wont fade

Standard - use for Whites and lites with bleaching / whitening agents

Colour - used on colours with weak dyes that could fade over time, less bleach etc

Biological - detergents with enzyme cleaning action

Non-Bio - no enzymes but has bleaching action, like Persil of old!!

Henkel Megaperls

Technically the Megaperls are a powder, not a liquid of course.
But there is no such thing as a "Megaperls Powder" it`s either Powder or Megaperls.
The difference is in concentration, you need about twice as much of the Universal Powder as of the Universal Megaperls per load.

@chestermikeuk: Sorry luv, my Miele is a solid door washer thus no washing action to be seen. No, didn't use 140F, but 120F instead with wonderful results. Between the oxygen bleach contained in the Persil plus the "bleach and enzymes" stain booster added (really only wanted the enzymes, but didn't have anything in my stash that way), wasn't too worried about any germs in the wash.

Persil Megaperls in addition to being concentrated was also designed to do away with the "dust" of powdered laundry detergent. Thus making for neater and cleaner measuring, storage, production and dosage. As one who got a nose full of (vintage) Persil powder yesterday, have come to appreciate the megaperals in my stash.

You can read of the history regarding German/Henkel Persil here:

Megaperals, Universal

Here's what I think and I might be thinking incorrectly

When I started using Persil in 2003 I used Persil powder.  This box lasted almost 2 years.  The next boxes were  Persil Megaperls for whites and Megaperls for colors.  With Megaperls the boxes are smaller, but still do the same number of loads because the formulation is more concentrated than the powder form.  The consistency is that of little beads and not of a powder.  If you drop any you can almost scoop it up with your fingers because it doesn't fly all over like powder.

Currently I have Megaperals Universal  and I use it in white or lightly colored loads only because the side of the box recommends not using it for colors and suggests using Persil Megaperals for colors.  The difference seems to be that Megaperls for colors does not have oxygen bleach or whiteners like the Universal.

Universal states that has cold wash action and lists the temperatures at 20, 40, 60, or 95C.  It also states that it contains an anti-Greying formula - I don't know exactly how this works but it might not work so well on colors.  It seems to be Universal in temperature but not in color.

Miele detergents which are made by the German company Krussler follow this same pattern of having detergent for whites containing brighteners and bleach and detergent for bright colors which are free from bleach or brighteners.

Universal

IMHO means the detergent is "complete" in that it contains bleach, enzymes and god only knows what else so Haus Frau does not have to add anything further. Ariel has a version of detergent sold in Germany called "Complete" which is marketed for the same purpose; whites and colourfast laundry.

Obviously detergents for colours one does not need a "complete" detergent because routine use of bleach (oxygen) will fade colours. There it is better to avoid the stuff or add it separately if required, say for shifting certain stains.

As one's German isn't up to snuff could only guess a

It says:

This double-pack equals 80 liters (eight buckets) of powerful, mild suds.

Whites - 6 tbsp. per bucket - let come to a boil and then soak for 10 min.
Colors - wash in the same bucket or add 5 tbsp per bucket - wash at 60C, don't boil
Synthetics (white) - 2 tbsp for 4 liters - wash at 60C, don't boil
Synthetics (colored) wool, silk - 1 tbsp for 4 liters - wash at 30C, lukewarm

Soak heavily soil laundry in Persil 59: 3 tbsp per bucket.

Pic two reads:

Also in washing machines - Persil 59!
Even in tub washers (pulsator or agitator type) Persil 59 proves its numerous advantages. Persil washes blindingly white, cares for your laundry and protects your machine. Dosage for tub washers: 6 tbsp for ten liters of water.
Persil 59 disinfects - deodorizes! No soda - no chlorine!

Danke schön!

Well got the dosage nearly correct since 4 tbsp equals 1/4 cup was off by just 2 tablespoons. Still one added 5 grams of STPP and one Vanish stain tablet (sold here as Spray n Wash "Pink" in wash tabs), so am good.

Methinks will try washing some towels next to see what there is. Just luuuuuve the scent.

This thread has groooooooown...

Okay, here some information:

Don't be "tricked" by the word Universal. Henkel just kept that expression to make it different from the other versions.

Universal just means, that it is the detergent for WHITES. It has one of the strongest bleaching power as German Consumer reports (Stiftung Warentest) found out in several tests. So I would definitely NOT use it for colored laundry. Black socks will turn into grey within 20 washes. Nevertheless it is recommended to use once on colored items if there happen to be quite tough stains on those.

So there are other versions beside the Universal one: There are:

- Persil Color (all colored laundry)
- Persil Sensitive (for people with sensitive skin)
- Persil Black (only liquid, for black items and Jeans) --> just a marketing gag in my opinion

Moreover there are different "versions" like powder (non-concentraded), Megaperls (concentraded), liquid, Tabs (only Persil Universal) an very new MegaCaps (or liquitabs).

Persil gets reformulated like once a year but at least every 2 years. So it gets other names (anti-grey formula, cold-wash-active, super brilliant-formula and so on). Have a look at the website, I think it is very clear and "tidied-up".

I have almost no white clothing, other than several white dress shirts. At work I wear "office casual": khaki trousers, collared shirt, no tie. I would never wear a white shirt without a tie. Whenever I bring home Persil from Germany, I look for "Megaperls Color". I only need to use 15-30 ml per load in a large FL machine (Frigidaire 2140....large by European standards but on the small side by today's US standards, where machines seem to grow larger each year).

I have two packets of Persil Universal Megaperls brought back by friends visiting Germany who didn't know any better. I am aware for the potential to bleach dark colors with this formula, as mrwash explained, so when I use it, I separate dark colors and wash the darks either with a US detergent (Tide or Gain HE powder, no bleach), with Swedish Via (= Unilever Persil in Sweden) Color, or with Ariel Bio color from the UK. I wash lights with my German Persil Universal, but not dark colors. So it lasts a long time!!

I think mrwash is right....the word "Universal" is misleading. Of my two German Persil packages, one was bought by US friends visiting Germany, they had no idea what Persil was and simply went into a market and did the best they could. The other package was brought by the parents of a German friend living here, they knew I wanted Megaperls but my friend here forgot to tell them about "color", so they bought Universal, again possibly misled by the name, unless they use Persil at home and know the difference between the two formulations. So I have two packets of Universal Megaperls, whereas I need color more than Megaperls. So it can even be misleading to German customers.

Just got

some Persil Color Megaperls sent to me today, from whirlpolf in Germany(Thank you Joe!) Smells wonderful, not strong smelling at all, very pleasent. I can't wait to try it out and see how it does. I am sure I won't be disappointed. Persil Universal Megaperls(for whites) is one the "wish list" next.

Someone Get Me A Stake And A Hammer! *LOL*

Scent of this Persil I got from Stan won't stay down. It's like a vampire that won't remain in it's grave. *LOL*

The other day kept wondering "what is that smell?" wafting from the laundry area into the hall and such. It took me a few days to realise but it's the Persil that is crated and packed away. The scent is actually now coming out of the sealed shipping box. Mind you the individual boxes are encased in ZipLoc bags and wrapped in bubble wrap, then the outer shipping box.

Isn't though!

As you well pointed out "until there is smell a vision" no ones going to believe us!

This was my first experience with Persil so had no way to tell if that was normal, or if something is wrong with it!
Do the Universal Powder users like that scent? ?

Think I'l go down to the vacuum shop where they might sell this, and make them let me smell there boxes *LOL* and see if there the same, or if these are freaks of nature!

Oh then the Vacuum shop will think I just got out of Napa State Hospital!
Known here as the (BOOBY HATCH) *LOL*
