That's what they say, but it's a truly ridiculous claim. If a seller chooses to accept money orders and/or personal checks, the seller is the one who's taking that risk. It's the seller's responsibility to allow adequate time for a buyer's payment to clear -- before they ship the item.

Look, Ebay has become one of the world's largest facilitators of fraud, and only an astonishingly small percentage of this fraud is due to fake wire transfers and bad checks. I've been accepting personal checks for 10+ years without any problems.

Ebay is using this as a smokescreen, to give people the impression they're actually doing something about fraud. They're not. Right this second I could list tens of thousands of counterfeit items currently up for auction on Ebay, primarily from Chinese sellers. Ebay knows this stuff is counterfeit, and they refuse to lift a finger to stop it.

LOL

Money Bookers sounds like something you'd see in a gangster (mafia type) movie. "How you dooin'. You winna de auction, you give me da money, capiche?" (machine gun goes off)

And Paymate sounds like something you'd see on an adult website.

So ironic, Ebay just keeps getting nastier all the time. Last week they yanked all of my auctions, because they said sellers are no allowed to accept personal checks as a payment method (for almost all item categories).

I've been doing so for over 10 years and never had a single problem, but I guess they've decided to start extorting sellers for Paypal fees.

Right up to the auctions I listeda week ago, I had no problems, even though I had money orders and checks mentioned. I listed n item today and received a warning box when I went to review before finalizing. It told me that it appeared I was accepting money orders as a form of payment, and that eBay was stopping auctions that allowed "unapproved" forms of payment.

I listed it anyway, then went to the revision screen to remove the "offending" verbage. I did add in there, though, "I can no longer advertize that I accept anything other than PayPal. Sorry, but please ask if you have any questions about this." Kinda leaves the door open.

Think eBay is pushing or rather forcing PayPal and other electronic means of payment to cut down on fraud.

Too many people have paid for eBay auctions via check or money order, never to see their goods,or goods were not as advertised, or the check was used as part of a illegal scheme, and so forth. Problem for eBay is they can do nothing aside from ban the seller, and yet the bidder still holds a grudge.

As for opening up to other payment services, eBay was going ot have to do that sooner or later.

Paypal as a wholly owned part of eBay was starting to tick some the wrong way with the later forcing the use of the former. This was getting to the point of "anti-trust" being spoken, so better to nip that route in the bud.

Back to PayPal for a moment. That company has begun some new rules and regulations that perhaps are meant to deter fraud, but are ticking many off.

Recently Paypal began contacting customers in many countries telling them their accounts would be required to carry a reserve. That is an amount of funds (which can vary) must be in the account at all times. One assumes this is have ready funds in case a something goes wrong, and avoids Paypal having to try and debit funds from a bank account.

Well, it's no skin off my neck either way. Stopped selling on fleaBay years ago, and if they keep changing the site, will cease shopping there as well.

Many, many people, some sellers who helped build eBay to what it is today, are walking away. More and more eBay is going after large players and forgetting about the little person.

I agree 100%, Jeff. I have yet to receive a bad check or money order, and I accepted at least hundreds of them, especially before PayPal was so popular. I generally cashed Postal MOs right at the PO. Mdse paid with other MOs and checks was held for funds-clearing for the most part (made exceptions on cheaper items and for repeat customers I had goodwill with).

I've had more trouble with PayPal playing judge, jury and executioner, with nothing to back them up. Luckily, never as a seller, however. But, as a buyer, what good does it do for them to find in your favor if the seller doesn't have funds in their account?

Still enjoying selling on eBay, and, for the most part, getting more $$ than I could selling privately. It's still pretty cheap to sell there, all other venues and respective exposures considered. I'm certainly not gonna cut off my nose to spite my face!

Ebay Australia tried that here. They removed the option for direct bank transfers and we ended up with Paypal or COD.

The ACCC (Australian Competition & Consumer Commission) ruled the decision to be anticompetitive and within a few weeks, ebay had to re-allow other payment options.

You still have to have a paypal account, but it isnt mandatory to use it anymore.
