I decided tonight that I would take pictures of our "other" appliances such as the dryer, range, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, etc. Except for the dishwasher (Yuk...) everything is scratch-free and works well. However they're certainly not the most stylish; I'll tell you that right now!!!

Also, there are some bigger shots of my room and my '83 Zenith Space Command console. Enjoy!

Hey Austin, happy new year! When I click on the link it shows the Whirlpool refrigerator. Is it supposed to have taken me to an album?

Hi, that link worked just fine. That range caught me off guard, then I saw you said it was from Canada.

We have the exact same dryer (the washer looks like it but I don't think it's an exact match because the front edge of the cabinet top is different; on the dryer it kind of slopes down in front, where the washer is the typical Kenmore style top). Maybe it was made to go with one of the newer Sears washers that have the lid opening toward the back. The dryer says Kenmore Elite but the washer just says Kenmore. It's a very good dryer.

Ah yes, the Hotpoint dishwasher. Have had a few BOL ones in apartments. Noisy and I can't even imagine how much water they use since they fill and empty so much, but they did ok at least for me.

Your room is really cool. I like the decor and I remember those GE clock radios well! I think it's the furniture bumper that is missing off of your nice Hoover Junior?

Thanks for sharing the pics!

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the comments. My dad's friend out in Roscoe (West Texas) has the matching washer to our dryer. The reason for the sloping front on the dryer is that the washer, while a normal DD Kenmore on the inside, has a Calypso-style lid, and it's curved at the front like the dryer's top is. It probably has that lid to show that it's more TOL (as well as the HUGE array of knobs on the front).

That damn Hotpoint DW has turned the kitchen into by far the ugliest room in the house. First of all, it's noisy and guzzles water, especially on the Pots & Pans cycle (tub fills HIGH there)! But it's not messing up the kitchen by appearance. A leaky drain valve (I don't have the repair manual or else I'd fix it) has caused the Wilsonart laminate flooring in the kitchen to rise up, forming ugly "bubbles" in the floor. It's HIDEOUS, and since it's a galley-style kitchen, you can see the damage from the living room, and it's spreading. My parents are already going to have to spend a lot to replace the floor, but now that there's a Lowe's in Brenham we can finally replace the DW with a GE or KA...the Hotpoint's days are numbered.

The range and refrigerator, while ugly almond, are still doing great. After the DW's replaced (and the kitchen's tiled), next comes the refrigerator. We're thinking a TOL SS GE Profile side-by-side. The Whirlpool's going to the shed; it looks & works too well to be thrown away. I might also eBay it...who knows?

Actually, the picture with the Junior in it was taken before I found the '83 Zenith at an estate sale and put it in; the chair was where the Zenith is now (next picture). I did realize the bumper was missing, however. I should have ordered a new one in 2003 with the NOS bag bellows & belts...didn't think of that.

Gotta love those 70's-80's GE clock radios!! I was originally looking for a higher-end GE or Panasonic vintage flip-number clock radio, and this one was digital, but I still had it in mind. I would have REALLY liked to have found a GE 7-4885 "Great Awakening" Programmable Clock Radio from the late 70's/early 80's, but every one I bid on I lost. I was using a newer Timex clock radio at the time, with an annoying, weak alarm and stiff manual controls, so I couldn't wait and be too picky. I paid $10 for the "Touch Control" and was the only bidder...that surprised me. It's a good clock radio; has GREAT sound for its size, adjustable volume for the alarm, fast time set (not "Hour" or "Minute" buttons...YUK), a large Snooz bar, and what I like most, 2 separate wake times!

I did spot a 7-4885 on eBay recently (picture of this eBay 7-4885 below), but I was out-of-town Thursday & Friday and couldn't bid...a shame since it was in near-mint condition, as well as the blue-display model that I'm after. :(

Many people have commented on how the 7-4885 was the best clock radio ever made. From looking at the features and styling, I agree. This is the only clock I would replace my "Touch Control" with. If anybody reads this and has a 7-4885 that they're not using...let me know ([email protected]) so it can go to a good home!! This particular "Touch Control" model is somewhat hard to find as well; I'll definitely trade it on a 7-4885!

Cool room Austin! It`s great to have parents that let you decorate the way you like. Love the ceiling fan, looks great with the retro look of you room. I also like the vintage computer. What brand is it? I still have an old gateway 486D/X33 in my shop and it still works great! Enjoyed your pics, Don

Cool room Austin

I love those lamps in your room! Good choice! I think since your taking all those pictures you need to post one of yourself in the here's my picture post! I am as soon as I get back from Ft. Wayne.

Yes, it's a cool room!

Went to IKEA on Saturday. We have one in New Haven CT that opened last summer. Definitely a neat place to shop! The lamps are really something, we're on our 5th lamp purchase now. We bought a furry rug, square picture frames, baskets, curvy bottles, etc there Sat. The resaurant is great & reasonably priced, the frozen yougurt tasty. If there's one nearby, go!
I'm not sure if they're nationwide yet, but IKEA is coming!

Austin's Room

He needs to thank his wonderful mom for her great taste and patience!!

He also needs to quit dissing my kitchen! LOL

Austin's Mom aka retromom

Hi, Retromom! Welcome! We are glad to see you here. For the record, I do like the paint colors you have in your kitchen (the yellow to the left of the fridge and the sage green on the cabinets). If you do go with stainless steel fridge and dw, they will look very nice with those colors.

I'm sorry to hear your laminate floor was spoiled by the dishwasher, but I think you'll really enjoy a new model, and I know you'll be in good hands choosing with Austin shopping with you! I have a newer Kenmore Elite which is equivalent to a KA and have been very happy with it over my old BOL Maytag.

You seem to have raised a very warm, polite, tolerant, socially aware son, and you I'm sure are very proud of him, and I'm glad takes part in this club. I for one enjoy knowing people, and hearing ideas and experiences from all age groups. Kudos to you and your husband for letting him be who he is and enjoying what he enjoys. It's fun, and of course he does and learns things that are only going to be a boon to him in adulthood.

4885

I agree - the best clock radio GE ever produced. Found it at a nickel and dime store for quite a steal! The feature I like the most is the auto dim, unlike a different GE model that I had; it featured a pot on the back of the unit to control the brightness.

Now if I could get the girlfriend to figure out how to use it! =)

Ben

Austin,

Thanks for the pictures. I have the same computer and the same screen! The only difference is that I have the extra set of speakers that fits under the screen.

I love the range, when I started browsing on the internet in 1997 and discovered some American appliances websites that style range was my favourite.

Ikea is one of my favourite stores. We have one in our town, only 5 minutes from my house. It attracts a lot of customers from Germany. That's the reason they are opening soon a new store which will be the country's biggest Ikea store.

Boy Austin!

Your in trouble now! Now that your Mom's a member you can't say anymore about the dishwasher! LOL. What are you gonna do if she cuts you off from the W/D? You'd better watch it!

On board now

Thank you all so much for kind words and warm welcome! Austin is a great kid and, is in the process of educating me on the nuances of washers, etc. Eventually, I will be able to tell a GM Frigidaire from a Norge (gasp).

I probably won't post too often (for obvious reasons; Austin is the washer expert), but on occasion will put in my two cents worth.

Yes, the kitchen is a disaster, but we looked at a Bosch dishwasher today. The only thing that doesn't sell me completely on this model is the cheesey flatware basket. It is so flimsy, it looks like it would melt during the drying cycle! May get on repairclinic.com to see if they sell the upgraded replacement (same dimensions, stronger plastic).

Thanks again for the neighborly welcome!

Austin, I'm not sure what model Bosch you're looking at, but the ones I've seen don't have an exposed heater in the tank - just the flow-thru water heater in the circulation system.

It's funny that you posted pics of your clock radio(s), I have the same one that I've had since high school (20+ years now) and won't give it up. I'd love to find another Panasonic like it someday as this one has a couple of minor issues, scratches and the ALM indicator doesn't turn off when the alarm is turned off. Neither of these affect the function, just detract from it's "mintyness" ;-)

Austin- I have almost the same dryer!

My dryer is a coupla years older. It is a Kenmore 90 series but has the exact same features. It also had a bad motor when I got it.

My landlord also owns another house here. His tenant at the other house came to me when I was still at sears. He said he needed a new dryer because the one at the house crapped out.

When my landlord was here last summer to do some work on the properties (he lives in california right now and hates it, but thats a big shaggy dog story) I asked him to put in a dryer outlet for me. When we first got here I didn't think I would need a dryer, but the hawaiian winter proved otherwise.
So Ed put in an outlet for me and asked if he could go get a new dryer for me. (Ed is an awesome landlord). I told him I would take the pooped out dryer from his other house. I popped in a new motor and now it works like a charm.

It does have a huge drum-no prob with my califoria king bedding (california king is longer and narrower than regular king). Drys mega quick too-of course my ducting is less than a foot long so I have great airflow. The Hettie has a hand in the quick drying times too.

Hawaii winter? Tell me, what is this like? :)

My cousin just moved from Hawaii to Orange County, CA. His first email to me was so funny. The general theme was "it's so cold here" and every other sentence was seemingly "did I mention how cold it is here!" LOL. It seems funny to me of course. I've never been to Hawaii but I think southern California has probably the most perfect climate ever. I think he's adjusted quite sufficiently now and is very happy.

He is from Wisconsin, and was there over Christmas, must drop a line and see how he did.

Hawaiian Winter

Of course, if you visit from the mainland, there is no winter here. When you are here all the time there is a definite change of seasons. The tempurature drops 5-10 degrees and it rains a lot. Here in Kahului we see no rain from may til oct, but in the winter it can rain for a few days in a row. Thats where line drying becomes aggravating.

various things

Wow, a teen-agers room that isn't a MESS?! Amazing and impressive.

I bought one of those GE 4885 clock-radios new and it's still in daily use. Yes, the ability to hook up an outside antenna is a definate plus, surprised it had the ability at that late date. The thing the sold me was the ability to directly enter the time and radio frequency. They had a problem in that the buttons would stop working and mine was fixed under warranty. Only problem is, somehow they screwed up the electric eye that dims the display when the room is dark so that the display goes almost COMPLETLEY off and I have to turn on a light so I can see the time. They had lower models, too i.e. 4880. The radio before that was a Columbia Masterworks with the drop-leaf clock I bought in 1971. It was retired when the leaves began to screw-up, though I still have it and it works otherwise.

I guess I'll do the pictures of all the appliances thing, too, at least the large appliances & the vintage small appliances like the Mixmaster & the 1960 Kenmore perocolator inherited from Granny

We have the same fridge (80s Whirlpool). Only problem is the light doesn't work. But it's still goin.

LOVE the tv! I wish I had one like that so I can hook up my Atari plug'n'play game stick. It's an Atari joystick with the games built in. I also have one with PacMan which is just like the arcade game.

Love the Hunter fan. I love the "UFO" look to it.

My GE 7-4662A
ge-clockradio.jpg

My sisters had one similar to the 7-4885, also with dual alarm and the numeric keypad, but I believe it did have a 'touch' snooze bar. One of them might still have it, I haven't 'scoped-out the situation.

7-4885

Any 4885 had the Snooze bar. Use mine everyday, about 3 times before I finally crawl out of bed. I know the two alarms were meant for 2 people, but I use mine for weekday/weekend purposes or when I have to get up at an abnormal time so I don't have to disturb the setting on the regular alrm.
