Outer Limits -- The Galaxy Being

Anyone remember the original "Outer Limits" series? One of the first episodes was "The Galaxy Being", and for 40 years I wondered how they achieved this effect:

Well, the answer turns out to be a lot simpler than I thought. Scenes with "the being" were simply shot in negative. Check it out:
