Now Isn't That Interesting!

Well this is the closest I’ve seen to an accurate history of the American automatic washer, (outside of this website of course) but its still not 100%. Automatics were developed in the 1930’s and first marketed by Bendix in 1937. Then they became popular in 1940’s and 1950’s. Only the Bendix washers had to be bolted down, the 1940 Westinghouse had a suspension system, later Westinghouse did sell lower-end bolt down machines as well. The article also makes it sound like Frigidaire washers first came out in the 60’s which of course isn’t true as they were first on the market in 1947. The Frigidaire Unimatic was actually in some “test” homes in Dayton, OH as early as 1940.

None the less, I am impressed at its relative historical accuracy. They also use the terms Unimatic, Pulsamatic and Rollomatic (they obviously mean Rollermatic). Me suspects that they garnered some of this information from this website, because where else are they going find this information! Certainly not at the public library, oh wait minute, I take that back the internet IS the worlds biggest public library.
