I was emptying the recycle bin and now the entire icon is gone from the desktop.what do I do to get it back? have new vista system .

That happens to many folks. The problem is that the English language version uses two terms which are far to close to each other in the dialog box.
Your can bring it back immediately (until the next time you make this mistake) in the Display settings (either right click on the desktop to bring up this menu point or in system settings under display). In the upper left hand corner you will find a menu point which will let you determine which standard icons (network, trash can, etc.) are always displayed on the desktop. Just reclick the box next to the trash can and it will be back.
The first German version had this problem, too. It was reworked in SP1, not, unfortunately in the English version.
Let us know if this worked, if not I' get you screen shots.

THANKS!!! I got it back it now says recycle bin shortcut but it works so I really don't care what it says.. thanks so much mac
