Packaged Water Softener In The Rinse?

Always read on Calgon and White King water softener boxes, and was taught in Home Economics to add packaged water softener to both the wash and rinse cycles. Theory went that this would keep those nasty hard water minerals away from laundry. While I do add STPP to wash water for whites and lights, never really bother with the rinse water.

Is some chemical, like (but I'm not getting right) "sodium tri polyphosphate"--or something like that.

I am sure that someone else can cite it exactly.

Sometimes I will use the current formula of Calgon in the rinse, but not always. Shouldn't be combined with a rinse added fabric softener.

Kent's water is not extremely hard, like some areas, it's maybe 3 grains of hardness, and adding more than a little Calgon to the wash water is a sure cause of sudslock.
