Parts forage: Frigidaire 1-18 and Westinghouse slant-front 3-belt

Two of my favorite, keep-'em-till-I-croak machines need attention at the moment, because only the ones we love try to hurt us.

First up is the very much beloved Frigidaire 1-18 that Kevin gifted us, model number WCD3T, serial 31EG 5834. (Jon, is this a T-line? Do I have other surprises awaiting me?)

The timer motor in this unit died, and I was wondering if this is one that I could pilfer from something else--or should I be looking for a timer altogether? The 1-18 is now a lovely semi-automatic. Thank God it died just before the rinse, so that agitation never began after the fill, or I'd have a tub full o' pulp like Jon did with his jeans. ;-)

The Westy, model number LBB30SW1, serial A247646 (1963 model) needs a hydraulic shock absorber; the lower-right one has leaked out its oil, and now does a lousy job of damping motion. So, it works, but it rattles like heck, which is a shame, since it just went through its restoration. The peed-out oil is starting to leak under the machine.

Could anyone provide me with a bead on possible replacements, or crossed part numbers so I can go hunting?

1-18 timer motor is a easy repair.  No need to replace the whole time.  You'll need to remove the timer motor and find out what kind it is.  Most likely it is a Kingston Model 60.  I was able a few years ago to purchase a new one from Appliance Parts Company online.  I also sent my old one away to Dave Harnish that runs Davesrepair.com and had him rebuilt it.  What usually happens is a plastic gear inside the timer motor strips.  Dave replaces the plastic gear with a brass one.  Check out the link below I've inserted for you.

The shock could probably be replaced with an automotive one...find an old time auto parts store where everyone that works there knows how to adjust a carb...and has been in business since the dawn of time..they can eyeball the shock and find a replacement...hint:...stores with Autozone or Advance Auto Parts in their name do not count

I don't suppose these guys would work for the Westinghouse--I wonder if there's a part number to go from? The bolts on the '63 that secure the shocks are pretty beefy, and I could see these not fitting well, although maybe a sleeve would make it work:

Most if not all the pressure-filled Frigidaire washers and some SuperSurge dishwashers use Kingston 60 timer motors and the gear on the motor shaft often breaks on these as the plastic seems to soften over the years. I fixed my 1969 Custom Imperial dishwasher timer motor with a brass gear from Dave Harnish and since I had bought another NOS timer for the dishwasher I kept the repaired motor in stock. I recently used it in my 1967 Custom Deluxe solid tub Rollermatic washer and it works fine. I need to order more brass gears for other 1-18 timers (they are also Kingston 60 but with a different drive mechanism).

Shocks For A WH Slant Front Washer

Hi Nate, the newer shocks might work fine if you can get them mounted securely, I may have a few of the orignal shocks lying around if you want to try a 50 YO shock on your machine, LOL.

 

In general these shocks seemed to be pretty  durable, we currently only have one WH SF washer with these shocks which is the 59 L1000 we got several years ago.

 

I would also have a lot of other parts for these cool WH FL washers if you ever need anything for it.

Thank you so much! I'll give the new ones a try; I agree, it'd probably be an issue of borrowed time using the older shocks.

Assuming the length at the attachment points is correct, I think the only issue will be the bolts that secure them, although interestingly I see that they include a plastic sleeve in the kit, maybe for thinner-versus-thicker bolts. I'm sure I can cobble something together that will keep them attached. Or maybe just weld-in brackets and hard-mount the whole machine. ;-)

Replacement Shocks For Westy

Nate,Before you retro fit any newer shocks,which I would not recommend.Get on E-Bay type in generic shock absorbers 250502 .This shock looks like the one that would fit your machine.These shocks are made for commercial washers Speed Queen and others.You will have to call 123 laundry for the closed length of the shock.otherwise let me know the closed length as I have some brand new Philco shocks for the 60s Duomatics that might work.They are the smaller size.John

Yes it is a T line but you probably do not have the iron drive ring by now, its probably back to aluminum on the spin wheel - so no lumping of the spin wheel which is great.

 

I got one of those brass gears from DH and it worked quite well - however- it worked about a week when it appeared my 1-18 again stopped advancing. I was pissed !

 

However further investigation and memory recall solved the problem. 

Note on these machines timer death can also be confused with water level switch death!

The symptoms are identical except for one detail:

On water lever switch death - you find any setting from 15 TO 5 mins wash the machine will agitate and never move. If you set the wash time below 5 mins the machine will cycle the whole way through.

Thats because the WLS carries the timer current between 15-5 minutes, and at 5 minutes another switch internal to the timer block will carry the timer current. 
Very tricky if you don't know whats going on. 

Bendix had a very similar set up in their machines too.

 

Nothing like 1-18 clean clothes !! Period !!
