Quiet Please, There´s a Lady on Stage
Well final order arrived today of seals and such for the Whirlpool BD portable, and now have scheduled a service call for later this week. Indeed now have some parts that are surplus to requirements as one vendor threw in extra bits to my order.

A week or so ago, original service company (one that came out and examined the machine for cause of leak), telephoned to say while they were willing to do the work, they could not locate parts. Told them parts could be found and one would get them and call back.

So here's me with all this: seals, tub seals, spin tube seals, tub nut seals replacement kits, bolts, nuts, tub gasket seals, and more seals. All this added to several belts and pump one already had for this unit.

Did some reasearch and found that unlike say Maytag units, one does not have to replace the bearings when changing/repairing tub gasket leaks, which is pretty good since bearings are NLA and cannot be had for love nor money.

Now only hope the unit will behave and let the man work on it without "falling to pieces". By this mainly that the tubs will come apart and reseat without damage.

Wish me luck!

Good Luck!

The service folks may need a special tool to remove and install centerpost bearings (if they are being replaced).
I got the 4-port pump from you and all looks good with it. I'll put it on my parts shelf to await the time when it's needed.

Thanks,
Dave

Thanks All

Really wanted to run out and get some POR-15 and or the whole POR cleaning kit for the inside of the outer tub (in case of any rust), but too late now. Also am not sure how much "help" the repairman will appreciate, so plan on keeping my distance and let him do is thing.

Who knows, may still run down to Homeless Depot and or Ace Hardware to nab some Rustoleum (sp?) or even the POR stuff, but again not being sure of what is under the bonnet, and how long Mr. Repairman intends on hanging around, may have to leave well enough alone. Do know from when he popped the top off the machine to search for the cause of the leak, the outside of the outer tub was quite clean and had no leaks or rust through areas, so that's me for you.

Your meticulous planning together with the repairman's experience and I'm sure this repair will go swimmingly.

Cost

Well when finally booked appointment, inquired about the price, and was told it was something around $200. However since one paid for the inital service call to find out what was wrong (cause of the leak), that fee would be applied bringing down the total cost to under $100.

So total cost of this unit is still around $300, but one hundred was for shipping (U-Ship) from NJ into the city, and as seller refunded purchase price (lession, always pay with PayPal when possible), hopefully will have a great little machine when all is said and done.

Am probably going to be taking my life in my hands in asking, but once repairman gets the cabinet off, will ask him to take a look at the belt and pump. If one or both look suspect, will ask if he will swap them out. Have NIB belts and a pump at the ready, but again from what one understands changing the belts and or pumps on Whirlpool BD machines is a job more hated than doing the tub seal work. The belt in particular can take those who don't know how and or tricks of the trade hours to get right.

Worth the bullets...

The idea is, of course, to end up with a washer that will go another few million miles when done. The belt is a bitter pill, true, but since the cabinet will be off, a large part of the battle will already be done. Having done that job just a time or two, slow and steady is the key. Best wishes!

Belt drive compact washer repairs

Once the cabinet is off the pump is simple to replace the belt is a little tricky. The spin bearings are still avabille they are the same as the direct drive machines and every belt drive WP washer back to 1947. This machine is very repairable new or used parts can be easily found this machine was made in large numbers from 1973-1986. The trick is finding a repairman to work on it you need to look for small independent repair shops the chance of getting Sears or other large national repair company to fix an older machine is not good.

Don't Think The Bearings Are The Same

According to my information, the part numbers listed for bearing to this machine come up NLA every single place one has checked. PartsDirect.com, Sears Parts, etc.

There is another set of bearings for the full sized BD models, those are a bit easier to find. Now if you know where to find these bearings or the kit, please let me know.

THE BEARINGS ARE THE SAME

I have been repairing washers for more than 30 years we use the same spin bearing kit in all WP washers. This is one of the problems with not just trusting this type of repair to someone who actually fixes old washers, as Gordon said earlier its very unlikely your machine even needs spin bearings. Its true if you look the bearings for this machine the PT# comes up NLA but WP issued a service pointer years ago that said to use the regular kit.
