I am really lucky to part of a group that not only provides therapy, but entertainment. I joined a week ago and have hardly slept since, trying to read all the posts, present and past, watch all the vids and read all the profiles so I recognize each post. The newest videos posted by Robert are amazing. It is so much better than porn, I feel like I should be paying to join the site and see what's behind the trailer. Amazed and blown away with Roberts incredible work as well as that of all the rest.
A million thank yous for giving me a place where I finally belong.

Indiana held many Frigidaires

I lived in Indiana from 1975 to 1977 in the Amish country near Nappanee. Marbergers was the local Maytag and Frigidaire dealer and he gave me tons of trade ins and helped with parts. Thought I was nuts, but appreciated one less piece of junk he'd have to haul away. Other a than few mean and scary hillbillies working in the factories, my memory of Indiana is very good. What other state has the courage to have a resort and market it as "French Lick"?

Yo, Kelly, one more thing. If you ever catch any BS from anyone about being "weird" for being into this stuff, tell them this: "Guys like playing with mechanical stuff. Everyone else is into cars, so I went for something different, that I can work on indoors and when the weather is nasty. And you won't think I'm weird when something in your house breaks and you call me to come over and fix it." That usually takes care of *that.*

Personally I'm into eco-industrial design, which means technology-hacking for conservation & efficiency. People here are way cool and hanging out here has given me a ton of ideas for stuff, including the solution to the refrigeration problem (which is far from obvious, and should save approx. 75% of the energy normally used for that purpose).

Eco Friendly

I am resistant to the eco friendly movement, on some levels and I will promise to open myself to more options.
In agri parts of rural USA, many decisions made by eco idealists, in Metro settings, have not been practical. In a worst case scenario, some of those restrictions could threaten the future of abundant food supply if not resonably applied.
Much like like early peaceniks and feminists, some environmentalist can be a little more strident than I find comfort with.
For years I labled them Earth Muffins.
A red neck, farming cousin from Eastern Washington, recently visited and in her stream of conversations she referred to environmentalist as, Eggplants.
Living in Seattle is a lot of work, feeling the need to be overly PC, recycle properly and save the World, the babies, the clitoris of African women, the Rain Forest, insure freedom of Speech of not always freedom of opinion etc etc etc. It is difficult to find a venue when I can simply be spontantious, like we all are here.
I covenent with you Designgeek and many others like, to open my mind to value of conservation.
Its just that it feels like punishment and a time out and if I have to do it, so should all the poor people and the rich people and the politicians and the factories.
Now and in this moment.
Not just me and few others who care.
Whew, that felt good!

I can well understand your "resistance" - even if I am probably closer to some of the folks you mentioned in my political leanings.
I have lived in Germany since 1983. In that time I have been told time and time again that "we Americans" were responsible for every evil to befall the world. "We" have no culture, no tradition, no interest or awareness of the environment. How most Europeans regard the US under the current administration, I shall spare you.
The fact that nearly all of these folks who tell me what barbarian monsters "we" are drive over-powered cars at speeds exceeding 100mph regularly - and almost 100% smoke - the two greatest threats to human health over which we have direct control, escapes them entirely.
My answer to such nuts: None. Strident people, whether christians, feminists, hetero-centrists or otherwise just plain get on my nerves. Live and let live is my motto. I wonder if all these extremists realise that they could further their world-view more by working together with other people instead of attacking them.
But then, these other people aren't "awakened" enough to understand, now are we?

Oh, the joy, of feeling safe with a person, having neither to way thoughts or words. Knowing that with a breath of kindness, you will blow it all away, like chaff in the wind and treasure the kernals that feed love.
Each day, as I grow in the skills of navigating life, I understand more, the opinions of other do not negate mine or diminish who I am.

A classic though old-fashioned conversation starter is, "Do you have any hobbies?" And there are so many: Butterfly collecting, Fly fishing, coin/car/stamp collecting, antiquing, and on and on.

Ours is a hobby. Many people find other people's hobbies weird. Think about your reactons to someone else's odd interests.

That said, I will admit, even though I don't really want to, that most people think washing machining is really really odd. In fact, until I found this place on New Year's Day, I knew nobody else, my entire life, who loved washers. Finding all of these people was so stunning and so comforting, AND THEN to learn that half the house is gay--well, let me tell you: I can't even begin to unravel that one, nor fathom the depth of joy it brought.

I think about it now and then, and, honestly, I can't come up with a satisfying explanation as to why our loving washing machines so startles other people.
