Okay, I’ve posted several daft questions on this site, and here comes another.

I know there are a few top-notch shops that work on vintage large appliances. But most of those are of such high caliber, that they only do complete overhauls and nothing less.

I’m wondering if anyone here has had any luck finding places that will give an appliance the once over for a decent price. And if so, how did you find them? 

One reason this is a dumb question is that apparently everyone on this site is quite happy to do their own work. In fact, that’s obviously a big part of what makes the hobby of collecting so much fun. But unfortunately, I’m not one of those people. I collect for the quality build and the great look. I can’t take it any farther.

Right now, I’m especially interested in having the wiring checked out on my Frigidaire range, in particular to deal with the broken clock that keeps messing up the oven. I just don’t have it in me to pull something apart and start learning.

Suggestions, consolations, commiseration, or even gentle mockery are all appreciated!!

I would find a company that specializes in restoring older stoves and see if they would be interested in looking at yours.

It seems nobody wants to deal with the small stuff anymore. If they can't walk out of your house with at least a couple of hundred bucks in their pockets after one short visit they are not happy. They have their costs to run the business and they want to stay ahead of that game.

Now there are dealers and repairmen who have been around a long time that may be interested in helping you out. But to find those you'll need to look at the yellow pages and let your fingers do the walking. Or talk to someone you know who may have had a repair on an appliance and ask them who they used.

And be prepared to hear "it's an old unit, the parts will be very expensive so go out and buy a new one" even if the part only costs $1.00. I've seen/heard that MANY times!

A family-owned

furniture and appliance store would be a good place to start. The one in my home town was there when my parents got married and they bought all their appliances from them in 1966! The are still in business today and they still work on everything they sell (or sold). Same for where my mother bought her '74 Kitchenaid Superba dishwasher...they're still in business and still service as well.

there's one of the leading vintage appliance restoration places in the US run by a guy named John Jowers, forget the trade name, but you can google it using "vintage appliances".

Antique Appliances in Clayton, Georgia, offers apparently one of the best, if not the best, restoration services in the country. When I settle on the final design of my kitchen, I plan to send the chosen range(s) to them!

But they do complete restorations, and for now, I just want someone with some knowledge and common sense to pull off the back and look at the wiring. The clock and timer are not working, which wouldn’t concern me, except that they are somehow activating the Cookmaster from time to time and shutting down the oven. I can fix it with a quick jiggle to the dial, but I’d like to do better than that.

I totally envy the skilled people on this site who do their own work, but I’m not one of them. I wish I knew someone who was an old-school electrician who would take on the project.

I never thought of using CI, Kenny. I’ve bought a lot of things from CI, but never services. I’ll have to look into that.

Then again, if you never hear from me again, you’ll know what happened.

You can also try a used appliance store as they usually have someone repairing in back and usually familiar with older appliances. Have a note ready just incase to give your contact info if they will work after hours.
