Call me thick but how does it work..does the little device pop up a random number and then how does "your account" know what number the little device has given if it's not connected to your pc?

Hey Pete, the ones I use are issued from the bank with the accounts etc, not sure is the sequencing numbers are stored linked to your account, every one has a unique serial number that you have to link to your account details on registration, and so they will only work on the linked identified accounts!!!!!

There was an experiment with these at my company for accessing our crew scheduling system a number of years ago. They had a couple hundred people beta testing it. One of the problems is that you had to enter the number from the device in the computer fast enough before it changes to the next one. Quite a number of people didn't type that fast, so they'd have to start over again. Most people viewed it as a PITA. So after the beta test was completed, the company decided not to go with it. I think it was part of the Defender system.

They've been using a similar 'nugget' here at work for quite a few years now for network access. The code has like 2 or 4 hours of life, then it switches over to the next. Not a bad idea if you are a heavy PayPal user.
