With the drought this years peanut crop has been very bad production wise. Look for all peanut butter to go up 20% to 30% ove the next few months. There are lots of other foods going up also. Places in Okalhoma nd Texas have only had rain of 5 inches or less this year. I have cousins in SW Oklahoma that say cracks in the ground ar a foot or more wide and you can't see then botton of them. The rain they had over the weekend was a drop in the bucket in adding moisture. The farmers need much much more rain in order to plant the winter wheat crops. SW Okla.'s last date to plant is November 30, at the latest and then no planting of anything until spring.

I heard on the Today show this morning that the price may go up in some areas as much as 40%. So a 32oz jar that once cost $3.79 will now cost $5.30 or so.

Looking at rice, Minute Rice that used to go for $1.39 a year ago is now $3.79. That's over double the price!

Look for

Canned and frozen foods to go up in price this fall through next year. Here is a link to our local company that has plants in several state. Crops all over were bad this year due to flooding then the heat wave and drought in the Midwest, South and SE USA.

Raw white rice is so EASY to prepare, esp if one has an automatic rice cooker (which can be had for less than $30). Then big 25lb bags of white rice cost something like $.30/lb. A rice cooker might take 20 minutes from start to finish. And you don't have to tend it, either, so you can be preparing the rest of the meal while the rice is cooking.

Also look for smaller weights on products and the same pricing. Lots of sugar and flour and mixes are less weight but same price. Flour was 5 pounds and now 4 pounds same way with sugar. Still lots of 10 pound s though. Look at you cost per unit on the items to get your best price.

Lots of canned goods are less weight now also.

Seen at my daughter's Day Care: NO MEAT! NO NUTS!

If only "peanut allergies" and so many nut allergies in general weren't so common, nowadays, at least from what I've seen over the past few years...

As it used to be, the peanut butter & jelly sandwich in your kid's lunch was so common-place...! So sad...,

Peanut allergy treatment

Dave,

Saw an article the other day (version below) saying they may have made a breakthrough in the treatment of at least peanut allergies, and potentially a whole range of food allergies. As someone who has one kid with a shellfish allergy and the other with a tree-nut one, this could be very good news in the future. Now if they can just come out with it at a reasonable (low $,$$$) price that insurance companies would be happy to pay for vs. an ER visit....

I hate when they do that..

Honestly I'd prefer that they just raise the price, put leave the weight alone. I've noticed you can't get the 2 quart size of orange juice any more. They're such sneaky crooks.

I agree!

Stealth price inflation causes us to pay more than you might think.

Consider, you pay $3 for a container of orange juice.

The cost of the container is a fixed price, whether it holds 2 quarts or 59 ounces.

So not only has the cost of the juice gone up you are also paying for MORE containers.

I just switched to frozen concentrate grapefruit juice for that reason. It tastes good too.

Now I am paying about $2.25 for a half gallon of grapefruit juice. (The frozen stuff only makes 48 ounces so I have adjusted the price). That beats the $2.99 I have been paying by 25%.

I suspect the frozen concentrate is fresher, too.

I don't care how much peanut butter costs, just as long as they don't stop producing the smooth variety, they will have my patronage :-p

Yes, it drives me nuts in the context of using recipes. "Boil a pound (or 16 oz) of pasta" says the recipe. Kind of difficult when the box only contains 14.5 or 13.5 oz. and the same way with canned goods (tomatoes, ...) that used to be 16 oz are now 14.5 oz. As stated above, those 5 pound bags of sugar and flour are no more lol. I agree, just raise the price and keep the same volume. Pisses me off big time. (same way with the "1 pound can of coffee" HA HA HA!!

I can have peanut butter however I want it--The VitaMix or Blendtec allows this-just get a can of Planters Peanuts-dump it into the blender jar-and blend until you get nice, smooth peanut butter. Then pour it into a Ball type jar-its going to be hot after blending-just put the jar into the fridge---Best peanut butter out there.and it ONLY contains PEANUTS!

I picked up two more medium to large size jars today of my store brand from my grocery store. they had one super size jar left that was $5.00 and change and it was crunchy, don't like crunchy. I think I pai9d around 11 cents an ounce.
