An age-old problem, discussed in Ladies' Home Journal for August, 1936. Still as true today as it was 71 years ago.

That poor red hot 8 inch element looks like it is sinking below the trim ring; something still seen today when people use such terrible cookware that either the unit warps into strange waves or the metal support weakens from the intense heat and sags, taking the unit with it.
 
As much as I love vintage appliances and electric ranges, I don't care for models with long legs and off-set burners, looks ungainly and off balance, but the ad copy IS priceless! The phantom head of Fred Mertz hovering over the work surface is disturbing, too.
