Which one out of Ariel or Persil is a better performer in your opinion? Also the least foamy. Do you really need to use the amount advised on the box to get everything clean? Just seems large amounts are needed to do a normal wash. Why can't companies take out the filler so you only need say 25ml of detergent?
If I don't use enough product do I get overfoaming issues?

There's a ton of different Persil & Ariel Varitions..

Are you planning, or considering using American (usa labeled) ariel, Mexican Ariel, British Ariel, or German?

Persil also has a line of Detergent formulated specially for the British Market, and one for the Germans..

I just wanted to clarify that, before giving advice..

Which recently tested powders

Aldi Almat with stain-lift bio was the highest scoring detergent with 82%. Ariel with Actilift was next at 78% and Persil with 75%.

They all scored 5 stars for whiteness, but overall, the Aldi and Ariel were better in other aspects.

Persil vs Aerial

I traditionally use Persil Liquid - bio for whites and the coloured version for - colours. But after a recent visit (Lavamat)Jon left me some Aerial Pods for whites which I have been using and I have been quite impressed with the results - it seems to me that my whites are a little whiter using the Aerial.

The laundry, when dry, has a light and to me quiet pleasant fragrance.

I use a 40C cotton programme (1hr 46mins) with a 2 hour soak at the start to wash whites.

Ariel, Persil, Almat

Are all equally as good if you ask me, Persil is probably the cleanest rinsing. Just make sure you get the powdered bio formula whichever you go for.

Personally yes I do find the recommended dose is necessary, for optimum stain removal I go for the heavy soil dose on whites (160-175ml in my soft waterl) for a full load on a long 60c cottons wash. Stick the extra rinse option on and let it do it's thing!

Persil Universal Powder

for me and I don't use the recommended amount and get great results and it does rinse best for my needs. I have not tried Ariel simply because I don't know where to source it here.

Powder vs. Liquid/Pods

Vacbear58 -

How do you find the performance of the liquids/pods on whites when compared to full powders?

I have heard many say they like to use powders for the whites wash because the powders have oxygen bleach whereas the liquids/pods supposedly do not. Do you find it matters all that much?

I have seen the Ariel ads showing people using liquids/liquitabs/pods for grubby white socks that come out bright white, but I'm a bit hesitant to try it. Perhpas I should buy some and give them a go?

Ariel 3d pods are an in wash stain remover, basically loaded with oxygen bleach amongst other things, designed to be used with your normal detergent. They are a multi chamber design in two variants, one for normal laundry and one for whites ( see link )

It's true, Ariel does advertise liquids, gels and liquitabs as being for whites or coloureds but they have no bleaching agents so whites will become dull over time.

Persil's complicated :)

The rights to use the name 'Persil' is owned by two different companies - Unilever (A UK/Dutch multinational) and Henkel (a German multinational).

Unilever Persil:
UK and Ireland - Top of the line front loading range of detergents.
France - High end speciality 'inspired by nature' detergent. (The equivalent of UK/IRL Persil there is Skip which is most likely the same product)
New Zealand - Top of the line range of top loading and front loading detergents. Formulation is more likely to be identical to Omo in Australia than UK/IRL Persil.

Henkel Persil:
This is Henkel's top of the line detergent in Germany, most of Europe and it's usually their prime brand in most other markets other than France (where it clashes with Unliever's TM)

I'm not quite sure who would own the TM in the United States as the product's not officially sold there. Although, I would assume Henkel might have first call.

Ariel is a TM used by P&G in quite a few markets and there may be different formulations and scents.
In general the European Ariels are all pretty much the same product.

South American and other Ariels may be completely different.

@ Matt How you mean Persil is the cleanest rinsing? Leaves no residue?
I suppose with the fillers in powders you do need the recommended amount seeing as the first ingredient is a bulking agent. Thanks.

Only Official Persil Sold In The United States

Is imported from Germany via MieleUSA.

You can often find "other" versions of Persil on offer from various sellers either online or eBay. Some simply bring back stuff from wherever in Europe (an airline hostess sells on eBay this way), others like Germandeli.com work their own connections.

EuroAppliances in Canada sells Henkel's Sil powdered bleach/stain remover, and IIRC will ship to the United States.

I use neither Persil or Ariel..I use Daz!!

I use Daz washing powder on whites..has a tolerable fragrance and you can get big boxes for £4 at tesco!!

Daz = cheap, fresh smell, not overpowering, cleans well and white whites!!

At the moment I am using Persil Colour for colours and Ariel for whites n lights. I buy it from a local british import shop. I bought a big 90 wash box of persil colour as most of my loads of laundry are coloured. I wash a white load perhaps once every 3 weeks and that is made up of my kitchen towels/bathmats/cleaning cloths etc... Since i don't wash a lot of whites or lights i only buy a small box of ariel at a time.

Now i have the Miele Novotronic W918 i must say the Electrolux in the laundry is getting used a bit less than before. I just love the Miele!

Persil Colour seems to do a fantastic job. Im not a clean eater and frequently slop a bit of sauce or gravy down my shirt. I don't pretreat anything and i never have had any residue of a stain left behind. Most times i wash my colours on the 40* Cotton wash in the Miele which is a 1:59 all minute cycle all up. Sometimes they get the 32 min Rapid version of the cycle but that cuts out decent interim spins so i prefer the full cycle.

Ariel is just great I must say. The fragrance is nice and subtle after drying unless I have overdosed (easily done it seems with the old 'shaker' boxes). I try to use 1/2 cup per wash and that gets rid of everything. Even tea towels and cleaning cloths with tomato based stains that have sat for a fortnight in a covered bucket come out spotless. Granted I use a 95* cycle for these items. I just can't fault it. It brought my white sports shirts that i wore throughout summer back to vivd white. They were starting to yellow with perspiration stains.

I have used a big box Persil Bio in the past and that was just as good to be honest. I love UK bio powders as they always seem to do a flawless job! :-)
