Persil & Philips Ad Campaign [Mid Or Late 80s]

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Hopefully the Persil machine is amongst that lot, though Philips in the 80s developed a nasty of habit of producing a huge number of exclusive models for the likes of Co-Op etc. However I am sure that they would have used the top of the range core model for a nationwide advertising campaign, so the Persil model should be there.

The 1985 series 90 models were the last of the left hand drive machines, as 1986 saw the right hand drive models introduced.
More on those later!

p.s below is a photo of the diddy little Permag motor - a cute little bit of kit....

Brilliant brochure Paul, thank you so much for posting. I always think it's funny that in the 80's New System Persil Automatic was advertised for all your wash including wool, and look at where we are today with detergents. I doubt any of us use just one detergent for everything anymore.

Hi Louis.

1982! 1982! 1982!
Does this brochure cover the black fasciad series of machines at all, or had Philips moved on to the brown fascia machines, like my AWB098 Super Variatronic?

I know that my machine is from the 27th week of 1983, but am a bit unsure as to whether it was 'New for 1983', or 'New for 1982'.

If possible and you have the time, it would be great if you were able to post the brochure and show us just what they produced in '82 (the year that Richard aka Buzzman1982 arrived in the world).

No worries if not possible to post the brochure, but a list of the models contained within it would be great.

Cheers
Paul
p.s the picture below is from the VADS archives dated 1981 and shows an AWB082 Variatronic, revealing all its plastic tub glory:-)

Ooooohhhhh, I've gone all Philips'y! They really are great machines - true classics.

Below is a bit of bumpfff on how Philips classified their machines in groups, based on features.
The info below concerns the 800rpm machines introduced from 1978 onwards, through to just before the Series 90's were introduced.

Hopefully of interest - I feel like I have hijacked the thread a bit. Sorry Hass.

Hi Paul.

As a nipper I must have had Philips brochures from around this very era, but I just cannot remember any for some reason :-(

Glad you like the 1985 brochure - lovely big portrait shots of their products, just the way that a brochure should be.

Paul

Hi Euan.

Not au-fait with the AWB989, so cant help you with the issue you may or may not have with it.

Is the AWB989 the style of machine below, branded 1200 Electronic?

The bursts of spin could be Philips' equivilent of the Profile spin that the likes of Hotpoint had, where the machine would spin in short bursts at gradually increasing speeds (though Philips might have decided to just spin at top speed, rather than a gradual increase), with tumbling inbetween each burst.

I am no expert, so I might be totally wrong, but its just an idea.
Welcome to the forum!
Paul

Paul,

I thought I had scanned that brochure some time, but apparently didn't, no such thing as a scan on my computer or in the archives. Unfortunately I don't have a scanner anymore.

The models shown in the brochure are the AWB901 and AWB904 (BOL models), the AWB911, the AWB913 and the AWB921, the TOL model. Brown fascias with brown controls and chrome doors except for the BOL models.

I found one picture on my computer that shows the AWB921 (or similar). It's a picture of the 84/85 brochure, the brochure dates from January 1984, the color of the control panel was changed by then I think.

PERSIL PANGS

The Philips machines were in a class of there own, Philips were innovators aswell in all areas, yes i understand the feeling of coming all over Philipsy Paul :-)

BUT
I Would Love to be Able To Get Hold Of A Packet Of PERSIL NEW SYSTEM it was the very first washing powder i ever bought in 1979/80 (even though i only had a Hoover single tub machine), but to me in the 80s all you had was Persil, Aerial or Dreft for colours, arghhhhh memories

Anyway great thread and yes indeed Hassney you have provided a wealth of adverts for us to watch and remember so thanks for your efforts there

Oh wow...

Hello Paul, I have just seen this...wow mate, thanks for sharing the Philips Brouchures with us. In fact, it may have been the AWB989 that was used as part of the Persil/Philips Campaign?
Also thank you for the compliments regaurding 'The Laundry Lab'...

Hass.
