Found this Philips Hostess food mixer/liquidiser a few weeks ago in a charity shop and could not resist it.

So today I gave it its first run with a lemon meringue pie.

Also today from the very same charity shop I bagged a Magimix 4100 complete with attachments for £15 - I just couldnt leave that there for the measly sum. Considering it was bought in Currys in 1999 for £149 and IIRC the most up to date model now retails around £220. Fab piece of kit, although I will still not totally part with my Kenwood FP.

Anyway the Philips.....

Pictured here with its small bowl, and beaters. I was only whipping 2 egg whites and this size bowl is perfect.

Somewhat similar to the Mixmasters we all love, having 2 different size bowls and even the bowl size needs the user to switch between 2 positions to make each variant work correctly,

On the Philips the bowls sit on either of these pegs to engage it into the drive system.
Large bowl centrally and the smaller bowl to the right.

Large bowl installed. which requires on to unscrew the top of the machine using the big dial on top.

This removes the beater holding gear box.

SO I set Paul the task of making the lemon filling.

Sorry guys no recipe here. Cheated this time with Green Lemon meringue pie mix. Added splash of extra lemon juice though to liven it up.

My My I am a slut. Grease splashes on my cooker. Excuse me LOL.

Whipping the egg whites starting on slow. Machine is unusually quiet for soemthing so plasticky and relatively modern.

Dated around 1984/5???

And so into the oven and out onto the plate.

Prefer mine to have a darker top than usual, others like it barely warmed. Looks tasty to me........

That's such a typical Philips product! The beaters are exactly the same as the beaters that came with the handmixers. Later models had a single beater. A friend of mine has a later model, he thinks it is rather noisy. Glad you don't find yours very noisy.

The bargain of the day is the Magimix though! That is really cheap! Overhere there are bidding wars going on about Magimix machines. Often a 4100 goes over 100 euros.

I'd love a piece of that pie!

what a great mixer!

I have a Kenwood Major, branded by Rival when they sold them in the USA. I bought it over a Kitchaid because a) at the time they still had metal gearing b) they had a 7 litre bowl which was bigger than the 5 quart of the KA c) they had infinitely variable speed rather than 10 discrete speeds.

I just used it earlier and was reflecting on the fact that I bought it in 1994 - which, shockingly enough, was 16 years ago.

It still works great tho!

This Phillips of yours is beautiful.

I keep wishing for a scale with weights rather than the small digital I use - but between the cost and the counter space needed for it, I can't justify. Since I learned to cook from Delia Smith I use the euro methods of weighing everything...it also seems to take less time.

What a nice mixer find and looks in great condition

It is most similar to the Braun KM32 design wise. Osters Kitchen Centers were also along these lines but without a rotating bowl (mechanically) and of course overdone with buttons and trim and dials as American machines generally were compared to the Euro stuff which was always sleeker looking
