Hello:

I wonder if any of our resident Maytag experts (maybe Greg or Don Shier?) can answer a very obscure question?

As I've mentioned here before, the control panels on my LA108 washer and DE606 dryer are damaged. The gold lower portion of each has been partially eaten away by Spray 'n Wash. My research indicates that this gold treatment was called Sun Glow.

BUT- I've seen plenty of 'Tags that have a silver lower panel. My own panels show the silver vacuum-plating under the Sun Glow gold paint. Now for the question:

Was Sun Glow some sort of option, or was it something seen on certain models or years? I am a stickler for originality, and if Sun Glow was the only panel treatment used on my washer and dryer models, then it will get restored. But if it was an option, I actually prefer the silver to the gold (never have liked gold-coloured anything, to tell the truth). If silver would be equally accurate, then I'd happily remove the remaining gold with more Spray 'n Wash. I've found that the dials on these machines are also catalogued as a Sun Glow finish; they're gold, too.

See? I TOLD you this was a picky question! P.S.- I know I can do whatever I want- I'm trying to find out what is historically accurate here. Thanks!

Technically...

The gold color was begun on the '08 series in 1975 and the A108 should be gold.

It's your machine and you will quite likely come across another Maytag panel in good shape in the future, so make yourself happy - paint it red or purple if you like it - enjoy your machine!

What worked well for me was Hammerite Gold spray paint. Not authentic Maytag, but very close. Also, the Hammerite light blue color comes very close to the blue of the earlier machines. I'm a Hammerite fan--looks perfect on old Electrolux canister vacuum cleaners. Apply very thin coats of the spray until it looks right.

Well, Lord knows you have the original machines! I really love that 906 pair of yours; those are dream machines for me. I have your photos saved to my hard drive for an occasional sigh 'n drool session. I don't think I'm ready for a 906 pair of my own yet, because I don't yet know enough to keep them going as they should be kept (like the intricacies of the Halo from Hell, for starters). But someday, and hopefully soon...

Thanks for the tip!
