They have arrived from LA! Of course we are getting rain from a tropical system so I don’t have any good pictures at the moment due to having to unload them in the rain but will get them asap. Here’s some from the house they were removed from. They are dirty from years of not being used but I think they will clean up nicely. They are going to be major projects for sure. Thanks so much Shawn for adding these to the post about the GE wall refrigerator that you wanted so that they were able to be saved.

Washer model: LWP375
Washer serial: KC262324

Dryer model: LBP375

OMG what an amazing score Melvin!!! Those are beyond cool and the washer is super fun to watch with the cabinet acting as the outer tub the sounds going into to spin are something to hear!

I'm thinking from the model number those most likely are 1963 models.

1963 Hotpoints!

Congrats, Melvin! This is the first year for the Silhouette control panel, with the mode 375 being a MOL model. The tell tale for the year on 1959-1968 Hotpoint washers is the first digit after LW - with 3 indicating model year 1963.

IIRC, all '63 models have the straight vanned agitator, with the '64 models having the spiral agitator/Fountain Filter on most MOL/TOL models. The fabric softener dispenser Ken mentioned in the fridge thread would not fit on top of the straight vanned agitator post.

Hoping that these are an easy restore. There are TONs of pump kits out on ebay for the washer, if needed. The boot is a bit harder to come by.

Melvin,

Congratulation on this acquisition!  So cool to find a matching pair of anything in a color.  Looking forward to seeing and hearing about their restoration.

Once they're cleaned up, could we get a pic of you mimicking the pic that Robert provided in Reply #1?

Hotpoint washer, circa '52 or so...

When we moved into our newly constructed home in '58, my Mother wanted the then fashionable pink hue for our Hotpoint washer to match the color motif in the laundry room, the dowdy white was too 'passe.

My Father commissioned his brother to refinish the Hotpoint as my Mother desired, he was an automotive body and fender man, I remember the laundry room reeking of freshly applied automotive enamel for weeks.

Wasn't the Hotpoint line considered the price leader for GE?

Lawrence, either the image Robert posted above pre-dates shooting for the Dick Van Dyke Show, or they found a striking look-alike for Happy Hotpoint and mercifully gave her a stylish outfit complete with Laura Petrie hair.  I suspect there are experts among us who can advise.

Ralph,
Mary Tyler Moore WAS the original Happy Hotpoint in the 50’s on the Hotpoint TV commercials. I think that the photo that Robert posted is just a fluke. That particular hairstyle was very popular in the early to mid 60’s so the fact that the photo resembles Laura Petrie is really coincidental. I pinched the photo on my iPad to enlarge it and the woman's face bears a striking resemblance to the then First Lady, Jackie Kennedy, who also wore her hair like that in the early 60’s.

1963 Highpoint pair In pink

Yay Melvin glad you got these. I know how much you’d like to get laundry appliances in colors who doesn’t.

It was always so beautiful the all porcelain washer because the color doesn’t fade at all. Too bad they didn’t use the porcelain finish on the dryer as well.

We have a 1957 top-of-the-line Highpoint pair in pink and they are pretty machines.

I don’t think point was GE’s value line. They were two completely separate lines of appliances. Sometimes Highpoint had the nicer models sometimes GE had fancier, more advanced models, it just depends on the time. And the Appliance involved it was much like comparing Ford to mercury, sometimes one manufacturer or the other had the more advanced products.

Today, hot point is definitely the low-cost line and value leader, but that did not used to be the case.

Hopefully the washer will be in pretty good shape and you’ll be able to get it running again. The dryer shouldn’t be too hard to fix.

Silouhette Washer

My uncle sold homes for a builder that included Hotpoint appliances. With that connection, my aunt and uncle had all Hotpoint appliances including a white "Silhouette 16" with a fountain filter and a slightly unmatched pink Hotpoint dryer with a lighted dial. I must concur that when I had a chance to hear the beginning seconds of each spin, it sent shivers up my spine. It was like a jet plane taking off in the house. I can't wait to see/hear these beauties after your restoration. Bless you for keeping history alive.

dryer design

years ago,had Hotpoint dryer from about 1958-drum rolled on 4 rubber tire wheels,2 hollow steel axles turning in plastic bushings-bushings wore through and axle fell out. Had late version of washer-'69 or'70: in 1981,pump kits were readily avalible, but other parts had to come from junk machines that could still be found in 1981.

Older HotPoint dryers

Hi Brendan, I’m not real familiar with older Highpoint dryers. I did have a 1959 model many years ago it was a vented electric model and the 57 Hotpoint dryer I have is a water condensing model. Both of these dryers still double V belt pulleys in the back , I have seen some newer Highpoint dryers and I think they have the system you were describing with rollers in the front of the drum for support and they had a single belt, driving a reduction pulley and a roller in the back to turn the drum and I remember seeing these dryers where the front rollers failed and destroyed the plastic housing I think this is more likely what the dryer that Melvin just got has.

We did not see a lot Of Hotpoint appliances around this area, And we did have a small Hotpoint dealer right here in town we used to go through his throwaway pile and take parts and sometimes whole appliances.

What a find, congratulations! It seems as though some people just didn’t pitch stuff as much out here, probably because we have lots and lots of space out here.

The spin speed on these CoAxial transmission Hotpoints are 600-610rpm. The biggest issue with these machines is the brake spring above the transmission getting weak and letting the tub index too much during agitation which tends to throw some of the water out and reduces the water level. Hopefully this machine doesn't have that issue. The other issue I've seen with them is the clutch pad coming off of the clutch shoe which is an easy fix. Otherwise it's a great machine and very fun at that.
