I've had these forever I love them and always wondered what year they are... Are they worth money?

For the exact month it was manufactured, post the serial number. The value on a pair of Maytags like this depends on many things.

She listed them on Craigslist this afternoon for $500. The dryer is gas and they've been in storage for 8 - 10 years. I'm going to look at them tomorrow.

I went to look at them this morning....

First impression: they're a bit rough. For some reason the painted (enameled?) part of the cabinets are rather faded and discolored compared to the porcelain top.

The washer: There are some scratches on the cabinet (of both). There's a 1/2-5/8 inch chip in the top near the control panel and the little "copper cap" for the timer knob is missing (from both). Though the one thing I was surprised and dissapointed by, is the washer is on a newer (606-806?), large capacity chassis AND it has the standard capacity turquoise agitator in it. That looked really strange.

The dryer: also some small chips out of the porcelain top. It's a gas dryer and she said they were having problems keeping the pilot light lit consistently. Also the little access door is taped on.

I plugged them both in and turned them on. The lights work. The washer tried to spin but needs belts (at least). The dryer sounded like it started to turn but then the belt(s) came off.

I told her I'd have to think about it and let her know tomorrow.

I've never seen this, did it happen very often? Or is this machine a fluke rebuild or something.

Wish you had pics of them Kevin - and to the seller for $500 you need better photos

Is she firm on the price?

When she posted them at $500 she just threw that number out there.   After looking at them and discussed their condition with her, she realizes she won't get that for them.

PS.. I forgot to mention both the washer and dryer, like the white pair I have, were built in Dec of '62 (date code DZ)

So... Are you getting them, Kevin?

In a word, no.   Honestly I was on the fence about them.   Plus I have a number of other appliance projects (still) waiting in the wings AND... I am full up, out of space, have no more room (yes I've finally hit that wall).   So for all these reasons I had a price in my head, but never made an offer.   I spoke with her this morning and since her dad has built shelves and reorginized the garage, she's decided to hang on to them.

As much as I'd like to have a pink Maytag A700 (or the set), since that's what I grew up with, I'd prefer to have the original drivetrain in the washer and for them to be in a litte nicer condition.
