Don Shier is bringing his 142 (white) down here this weekend for a makeover training course, his has the lined glass panel and one-piece porcelain lid but still has the pivot motor and tension spring. I have the brochure for this model line and it shows the colored machines with the gray toe-kick so who knows? Could have been an extra painting step they elimnated early on with the colors.

No matter the details, this pink set on ebay is beautiful! Hopefully another glass panel can be found for the dryer...and an electric element ;-)

I am killing myself laughing. In my younger days I would have walked to CO and carried them back. Worry about transport after you grab 'em. Someone here will help you figure out the logistics. Good luck, they are beautiful.

Ok...as the owner of these fine machines I'm asking for

I listed these on Ebay because a local repair guy (whose had them for quite awhile) said he could rebuild them, however he since told us he could not and so my wife broken heartedly agreed to get rid of them...however thanks to a simple question to my listing I have since found you folks, needless to say We would love to keep these units If someone could simply tell us who could rebuild them etc...there were our first machines as a couple and work better than our brand new front loaders...not to mention I always wanted to be able to hook them up as night lights and when asked the inevitable question "Do they work?" I'd love to say "Ya wanna see them?"
I know they have one bid on them and I would be asking for your forgivness if I ended up pulling them.

does not matter if they work or not,they are beautiful works of art,or museum pieces.If they were mine I would never part with them.took me years of hard looking to find my maytag like that.Don

I don't think anyone who appreciates fine vintage appliances would mind if you kept them. There are so many good and knowledgeable folks in this club, you could easily find out how to rebuild them.

HELP!

O.K. anybody with any kind of assistance on timer part numbers or who can verify the model number (it says P142) but even maytag says "HUH?" I know I'm not nuts and really would like to restore these...say is anyone selling parts or complete machines?.... Just checking...lol

I have a panel from a late 142SB (S is for suds saver, B is for bleach dispenser) with an untested timer. It would be for a suds saver though. The P on the P142 is for 'Pink' as Maytag put a letter in front of the model number to show what color the machine was from the factory. The washer model itself is the 142. I don't have the parts books handy at the moment, so someone else could direct you to the timer P/N's if needed.

What exactly is wrong with the timers? I know a few folks here on the board have either repaired the timer/s themselves, or have sent them into a service facility that specializes in rebuilding timers. Hopefully someone could post the vendor's contact info. Hope this helps ~

Well thanks for the info Ben...upon knowing that little fact I went out and double checked things... the model is p142 but it does have a bleach dispenser?...makes me wonder.. I also cant figure out the model number of the dryer as there is no tag on it...but it is a match to the washer, Any ideas?

The timer was out when I got it and the repairman were I worked back then threw another one in it so it would work but he had told me that certain features wouldnt work..I thought it was because the newer timer didnt work on a particular setting...but with all the digging I've done today etc, I'm now wondering if it's even the correct one for the unit or if it was a pacifier...? (Considering back then I was a new father and hubby and couldn't afford a new machine) I just dont know.

I think I'm going to write down the features on the panel and the part number on the timer (same for the dryer) and see if anyone can tell me anything more on these...I do have a local repair guy who can rebuilt the machine stuff all except the timers, as far as the cabinet flaws, Paint etc (whatever it may need) I guess I'll rely on the web for parts etc?
Anyway thanks for the imput....keep it coming as every little bit helps.

From what I've noticed, it was not noted on the model tag that the machine would be a 142B (or 142SB) for bleach; it would just be listed as a 142/142S. I've only seen service literature mention the model number being listed this way - I would assume to show a difference when the service man would go through their books for service info.

Not an expert at all on the dryers, but I think the ID tag would be behind the main door, on either the upper left or right side. It is located in this spot on later dryers, not sure about these earlier units.

What exactly is wrong with the timer/s? Does it no loner advance, or get stuck on a certain cycle, or does the machine no longer come on at all? What features of the machine no longer worked after the repair fellow put the faux timer in the washer? This might start to help us out a bit.

Hopefully those lights still work - those make the machine!

well unfortunatley it's been to long for me to remember what did and didnot work....I guess thats a job for me to check out...clean them out...fire them up and test them.. but I think with the info I'm getting from everyone on here it sure does make me feel a little butterflyish...lol... gives me new hope for these ole machines... and to think that I had totaly given up on them because I didn't think and or would not have believed there were groups of people out here thatcared about and new so much about these old units...in fact it really floored a repair shop that I called today...she may even join your group too... she said she has an old pink fridge with a carousel in it?? sounds interesting.

Anyway I really want to thank everybody and apologize to bajaespuma as she had bid on them..really makes me feel bad but I am glad things happened the way they did as now I can actualy get these awesome machines back in order and putting my new front loaders to shame!!!

OK new info

Well I found the dryer model number...get this...not just inside the door, nor on the outside rivited on, but behind the gas door...the tag was on one of the support brackets.
Anyway it is a 741c... anyone know what year this is or anything??

I am going to go an guess that the washer and dryer are from approx. 58- early 60ish. If you go back to the model number tags you found on both units, you will see a serial number located on the tag as well. There will be two letters after a series of numbers - those letters tell the month and year the machine was produced. If you post the serial numbers, any number of us could tell you what month and year the machines were made.

I'm not surprised that you found the model tag on the gas door support brackets. The tag on Cory and I's '56 Gas Maytag (in pink also!) was behind the gas door too. I wasn't sure if they had moved it since our machine was a 1 year run only.

So go ahead and take some time to clean up the machines. Let us know what they do, or don't do, now. From there, we should be able to point you in the right direction.

Also, keep your eyes out for the Maytag Automatic Washer repair manual on ebay. It will be for the Helical Drive models, and will say it on the manual. I can also make copies and send pages to you as well. Let me know. Thanks!
