plastic vs. painted steel dryer drum

Are you talking about the finish inside the washer or dryer?
Todays powder coated dryers will not scratch or peel but may chip.
I've never seen a plastic dryer drum and I would not buy one even if you try to sell it to me for $.50.
If you meant the stainless steel VS the powder coating,
it's just a marketing ploy and both will get the job done without harming clothes.
The powder coated or (Dura-cushion/White porcelain) dryers rarely rust so it's to to worry about......

Thanks for your quick reply. I had ordered a dryer with a "painted" drum, then received a call to choose either painted or plastic. Had to move fast because dryer is to be delivered tomorrow. I had never seen or heard of a plastic dryer drum, either, and was really skeptical about plastic. Before your reply, I found out that the plastic drums can retain some nasty odors. Your reply helped confirm my decision to skip the plastic. I'm off to give the store a call.

I thought that like with Maytag and Whirlpool dryers they had a Polyester powder coat that is electrostatically put on the drum and then baked on to form that smooth finish. Whirlpool dryers used to use a painted drum and with all the action of the laundry tumbling against the back that doesnt move it took alot of the paint off. I have seen many a Whirlpool and Kenmore with that problem. Plus the dings on the drum surface from all the buttons and whatnot hitting it.
Stainless steel is by far the best material. My Kenmore (frigidaire built) dryer has that finish and it looks like new. Granted I dont use that dryer anymore thats one reason why it looks new. The Maytag (Samsung built) dryer has a stainless steel drum that is sound insulated and it seems to be standing up to the brutal punishment the tenant we have puts it thru. One thing I do notice that since he doesnt close up his zippers like I asked him to that the drum vanes have small nicks. The polypropylene vanes seem to have a soft surface that lets that happen. I sometimes have to go in and sand them down ...kinda strange I know and thats the only dryer I have that issue with. I have that problem with the fish vanes in the Maytag Neptune right where the ridges are and the holes for the vanes. nothing like doing a load of towels to find that they are all pulled because of that. I have never had a problem like that with a front loader but this one is testy. I have never grown to hate a washer more than I have with that Maytag Neptune. No wonder they are not being made anymore. If its not the chance of a fire or the basket drive spider flying to bits and I cant wait to see what else is going to get recalled on this beast. My 2 cents.
