Hi Everyone, I've been working diligently on a major new feature for automaticwasher.org since last Autumn. I'll get into exactly what this new feature is in another post but for now I need some help from as many users as possible to download this .pdf file and check it out for me on your computer(s).  A pdf file is a special kind of computer file that is used to read and print scanned documents.  Today's .pdf test file is the How to Install Your New Kenmore Automatic Washer from 1963 which is the complete 4 page installation instructions that came packed in every Kenmore automatic washer in the early and mid 1960s.

First here is the link to a sample download page <<<----------PLEASE CLICK on this link and download the test .pdf on that page.

Since the file is only go to be available to for a few days (then I'm going to take down that page) when you download this file its important to SAVE it to your hard drive so you have it forever, not just open it in your browser.  So if your browser asks you to OPEN or SAVE, please select SAVE.

Now please examine the file and let me know what you think.

<ul>
<li>Notice the quality of the scan and clarity of the text, is the file clear and very readable to you?</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>For those with a printer available, can you print the document, how does the printed version look?  For those with laser printers would you say it looks close to if not as good as you would expect the original document to look?</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Were you able to download the file and save it to your hard drive so you have the file forever, even after I remove this sample download page?  Did your browser ask you whether you would like to OPEN or SAVE the file?  After the file was finished downloading did your browser let you know it was done?</li>
</ul>
Any other issues with downloading or any reading this document.  I again I want to stress how important it will be to know how to save the file to your hard drive and not just read it in your browser.   Oh and by the way, for Apple iPad users, when I was at the Apple Store yesterday testing this on the iPad I noticed that you had to save it to iBooks after it downloaded.  So be sure to try that.

Thanks everyone and enjoy this vintage Kenmore document.  This is only the beginning of something that I'm hoping will turn out to be truly wonderful!

Win7-64bit, FireFox 11.0, Adobe X

Clicked on the link, was presented with the open/save choice.

Saved file without incident.

Opened with Adobe OK, looks fine.

Printed OK with HP1200 Business InkJet.

Works great Robert,thanks again for your work

Thanks everyone for helping!!! Oh and one thing I forgot to mention is in adobe reader, try Control+F which is the text SEARCH feature. Try searching for word or two and see how it works. These documents have all been OCR'd meaning they have been set up as searchable to you can search for text within the document. This brings modern convenience to vintage printed materials like never before.

Downloaded immediately. I am using Comcast, and Speedtest consistently gives me a download speed of 24 Mbps. Printed just as good as anything on an inkjet printer (someday I'd like to have a laser printer). The small reverse type in the round Sears logo on the first page (Roebuck and Co.) was legible; that's a good test of print quality.

Just beautiful!

Robert, everything worked well:

Notice the quality of the scan and clarity of the text, is the file clear and very readable to you?

Yes, very clear.
•For those with a printer available, can you print the document, how does the printed version look? Excellent. For those with laser printers would you say it looks close to if not as good as you would expect the original document to look? Yes, it's very clean and nice reproduction.
•Were you able to download the file and save it to your hard drive so you have the file forever, even after I remove this sample download page? Yes - I have the file for as long as I want to keep it. Did your browser ask you whether you would like to OPEN or SAVE the file? Yes it did.  After the file was finished downloading did your browser let you know it was done? Yes, it notified me when finished - it downloaded in about 20 seconds.

It looks great on my computer and I could search it okay, but when I printed it out on my monochrome laser printer, the text is not of the best quality. It's blurry and a bit fuzzy.

Perfect score, Robert!   I could view, download and print the document with no trouble whatsoever.  Thank you!!

hmmmm.... think this instructions for the 63 model will work on the 65 Turquoise LK?   LOL

I was able to download it...

I was able to click the link, get the option to save it, but when I went to open it in Acrobat 6 Professional, I got a "Bad Encrypt Dictionary" error.

I will try at home to see if it is any different.

Hi Tony, thanks for your test results, I certainly appreciate it. By chance is there a quality setting for your printer? Be sure if there is a quality setting when you send it to print that you have selected the highest quality possible. When I print these here on a cheap laser printer, it prints so clear it is nearly indistinguishable from the original document. As a matter of fact the original had yellowed a bit and after cleaning it up in photoshop before I made the .pdf file the new printed document is actually better to read.

Brian, these files are the latest and greatest version of Acrobat .pdf. They wont work with version 6, you must have Acrobat reader 7 or Acrobat 7 or greater in order to view these files.

Yes they will work for a 1965 Kenmore washer, but I suspect you don't need them Paul, I'm sure you've done this once or twice before LOL! Let's ask your partner ;-D
