Please help! Wringer washer N2LS maytag

Hi!

I've just bought and old Maytag wringer washer, N2LS serial #417351

This washer was apparently hauled to the auction on its side...

So my problem....!
This wringer washer runs when plugged in, I can hear the motor, the agitator works perfectly, no screeching or any strange noises, but the rollers won't roll. They were stuck together, we got them separated and tried everything, every position the knob will turn and they just won't roll, forward or backward.

Can anyone tell me what to do?

i don't know alot about wringer washers & am still learning myself, cuz i just bought one too. but for the rollers to get going, you say that you tried putting the wringer lever in every position but they won't roll. when you've got the lever in the locked position, if you click it back once, that is the position for it to start rolling towards the back. pull the lever forward one click, back into the locked position. now pull the lever one click forward and the rollers should start rolling towards the front. i think those 2 first clicks, in either direction, out of the locked position, are the only positions, that the lever will start the rollers (i think?).

so, click the lever once, out of the locked position, going towards the back. and now wait a few seconds for the rollers to start moving. i know mine takes like 3-5 seconds, from what i've noticed so far, for the rollers to start moving.

i will take some pictures right now & post them on here, to show you the different positions, if you don't already know them.

i'm sure if there is something wrong, the more knowledgable members will chime in & tell you if there is a problem or not.

also, just a thought here, are you sure the wringer is all the way down onto the post?? i'm pretty sure it has to be completely into position, with the gears lined up, for it to work.

i hope it's a simple solution like, you just not waiting long enough for the rollers to start moving. they will only roll in the first to positions (in either direction) from the locked position (i think?).

The S in the model number of your washer means Safety. It had a small plastic bulb pedal you had to place your foot on to get the wringer to run. If button was not depressed the wringer would not run. You can bypass this safety item by placing a 1/2 inch bolt in the place where the plastic is installed on the bottom of the washer. It is very simple to do but does sound confusing. If you need any further explanation please let us know. All Maytag wringer collectors are aware of this safety system and how to bypass it. see that is something that i did not know. i told you i was barely learning too!
hm hm hm.....

but that does sound like it could be why your rollers aren't moving. your wringer washer must be a later model, cuz i think i remember reading that the safety foot pedal control was added in the late 60's or early 70's. but i could be wrong.

keep us updated on your wringer washer. i hope you get it up & running. i'm trying to get mine up & running too!!

Oh my gosh! Thank you all so much! Wringer, I think the reason you said is the reason mine isn't working, it's a white one with groovy blue agitator and release buttons, do you think you could email me to walk me through these steps? There was definitely no pedal with this one...

Hippiedoll- thank you so much for responding, I don't think I even waited five seconds LOL, I'm def impatient, but I will surely try waiting too. At the auction they said, "she said last time she used it, it worked," well that could have been 25 yrs ago! Thanks for the pics though, I'm sure i had them right, but will double check tomorrow as this machine is currently in a space where it can sit until I get it running!

Here's a tip

I googled maytag wringer safety pedal. From there there was a link to www.davesrepair.com. He has an article complete with pictures on how to disable that thing. I don't think there's a single washer left that this bulb hasn't disintegrated and even when they were new people bypassed them because they were a pain. Check out Dave's site. He's a good guy and helped me out on more than one occasion.

From what

I can remember, there's a bolt that will fit into it, that plugs the hole, and by passes the bulb thing. Then the wringer will operate normally .

i hope that you getting it going and that it's a simple fix to bypass the safety bulb. everyone here who knows about wringers knows what they are talking about. a GREAT bunch of people here. YA JUST GOTTA LOVE 'EM!!!

HLEP Maytag Aluminum Tub

Can some one help . I located a maytag with aluminum tub
However the tub has some rough spots pit marks can these be polished out
Looks like water was left in machine

Sure can!

I'd start with a wire brush. Then a good wet sanding over the still rough spots. If you can't remove all the pitting it won't affect the wash results but I'd bet you can smooth it all out. Aluminum isn't all that hard a metal. Then you can use a fine steel wool or SOS pads to finish it out. For a final step you can polish and buff with Mag's Aluminum Polish. It's sold at Auto Parts stores and works wonders on the tubs. I have a picture I was trying to add but it keeps coming out too GIANT sized to post.
