Amazing coincidences here! I found this board because I was looking for information that could help me design more efficient home infrastructure. And now it turns out that I'm not the only one around here who's gay and also has vaguely "retro" tastes and lifestyle.

I'm a geek by profession and by culture, but I often describe myself as "mid 20th-century square." And here we find a group of people who proudly proclaim that they enjoy oldschool lifestyle, staying at home with their cats, rebuilding and using antique household machinery, and visiting with friends in a low-key manner reminiscent of the front-porch or back-fence socializing of earlier times. What a great relief, compared to the usual polarity between life-in-the-fast-lane excess, and the prevailing national tendency toward puritannical zealotry backed up by raw power.

It's good that someone started a politics topic; very interesting place to discover common ground. About which, a few thoughts...

Denying people the right to legal monogamy does not protect monogamy, morality, or anything else. It is as hateful as the old laws against interracial marriage. It is gratuitous hatred, fomented by religious extremists who do violence to their own faith, and supported with the power of the state.

Re. Scott55405 "It's almost like going through another September 11..."

Exactly! That's exactly the feeling, and I haven't had the words for it, but you are right on target.

Three years ago, religious extremists attacked America. We rolled up our sleeves as a nation united, and went to war to prevent it ever happening again. This election season, a different set of religious extremists attacked America but did it from the inside. This time they won a major round, by using a strategy of turning some of us (gay folks) into (pardon my language, but the words really do fit) the New National, to be scapegoated and despised and discriminated against, and subject to a new wave of Jim Crow laws.

If the comparison with 9-11 seems unjustified, consider the phrase "give me liberty or give me death." Consider that most of the people who join our armed forces do so with the idealistic dedication to the principle that our freedom is worth dying for. The core of our national soul is the idea that liberty and equality are every bit as important as life itself. When someone tries to make us less free or less equal before the law, they strike at the soul of America in a way that truly does bear comparison with a foreign enemy that attacks and takes our lives.

If you want to get really, really scared, put the word "dominionism" into a search engine, and read until you can't take it any more. The American equivalent of the Taliban are alive and kicking, and pulling the levers of power. Scary as hell.

As much as we'd like to stay at home, I think it's going to be necessary to stand up and fight.

Thanks, Jetcone.

I think what may happen here is, by the time the Jim Crow amendment gets into circulation, there will be enough states with non-discriminatory arrangements, and enough legally-monogamous gay couples around, that the religious extremists will not be able to get traction. It will be like trying to pass a constitutional amendment against golden retrievers or something.

Though, take nothing for granted. We already learned that lesson in a different way on 9-11. Once burned, twice vigilant.

repubican bigots strike out in Fort Wayne

I work for a company that manufactures products for the entertainment industry. The company is great to work for,and the people are friendly. The owner is republican,as well as most of the other people that work there. Appx. 60 people are employed.Of those 60 3 are gay,but not openly. The other day the sales manager posted a color picture on the bulletin board that was in very poor taste. It had a picture of a soldier with dirt all over his face.He had a army helmet on,and was smoking a cigerette.Under the picture the caption read in bold letters,"RED STATE" Then to the right of that was a color scene of a gay rights parade, with a couple of guys with face paint and funky colored outlandish hats.Below that photo the caption read,"BLUE STATE" Under the whole ugly thing another caption read, "ANY QUESTIONS?" Several people were upset by it,and asked me what to do. I was very angry, but decided to wait to see how long it would hang there on the board. It hung until the next afternoon, when the owner saw it,and ripped it down. The person that posted this picture is our sales manager, and is VERY involved the the Lutheran church, and the owners are members of the same congregation. Our company sells supplies to the entertainment industry. Many of our customers are gay. The photo was ripped down on Thursday, but so far no memo has been sent out pertaining to this photo,or rules posted regarding to what should or should not be posted in the workplace. I am not holding my breath....
I am glad I didn't complain.I would be a "Liberal Whiner" just sore because John Kerry didn't win. What we have here is a shining example of the right wing compassionate religous conservative,at work, spreading good will toward men for the Christmas season. Can you imagine what might have been posted if they had lost the election?? And they say the Liberals want to destroy the Spirit of Christmas??? Go figure!!

Happy Holidays,
Rick

There are idiots in every party. The owner doesn't have an obligation to protect anyone's feelings from stupidity. At least he was wise enough to take it down. By the way, how do you know there are 3 gays if they are not open?

Reply to Fixerman

A)Are bigots to be excused the same as idiots?
B)If the owner does not have an obligation to protect anyone's feelings then would it be ok to substitute a group of black people eating fried chicken for the blue state instead? (after all the majority of blacks are Democratic) (or perhaps some hispanic's with 15 kids in a Chevy? Majority blue once again) There are many minorities that could be used in place of the gay guys. But ANY of them would have been considered unacceptable by todays society.Except for one. The fact that the owner is under no obligation to protect this one group is very sad indeed. Although the picture was removed,I know for a fact the owner did not consider the fact that it was posted on the board a big deal at all.
As for your question of how I know three employees are gay: A) I am one of them. B) I am friends with the other two. And C) Quite a few employees were shocked and upset by the display that I know are NOT gay.
Thanks,
Rick

If not a legal responsibility, then certainly a moral obligation should exist for employers to provide an enviornment where all employees can perform the duties of their jobs without fear of being the targets of hate (yes, HATE) and bigoted propaganda. This crosses all lines of decency, not just for gay people as in this instance but all minorities. Corporations have spent millions of dollars on sensitivity training for their employees, obviously some people haven't gotten the message but with the current administration campaigning on the tenents of creating second class citizens and limiting civil rights through constitutional legislation, it's understandable (but no less deplorable) how these things are still happening. I hate to say it, but Designgeek may be right in his assesment of our new position in society.

The land of the free...

LIke I said before!

This WORLD so screwed up. Not just our country but everywhere!
Let people be people! Who gives a damn what people do with their personal life, that's their choice! A persons choice is a persons choice, not the goverments or anyone elses! When the word Judgement was invented someone over stepped their bounds. Now it seems to be the thing to do. As far as parties are concerned, they should have never been invented! Pick a side, bullshit. They all have faults! There is no reason to judge anyone, no one person is perfect! Live and let Live! Just the basics please. Be Good!

Oh Rick, I'm sorry to hear you had to experience that nonsense. One has to wonder what drove the sales manager to pull such an obviously offensive stunt and how it made him feel, after he did that, I wonder if he felt any bit of guilt or remorse. Probably not, these people are petrified of anyone who isn't just like them and could care less about anyone but themselves.

Bethann, wonderful post above, your heart is in the right place and I certainly respect that. As a gay person I would like to give you just a bit of insight. Gay people find the word "choice" a bit insulting since being gay has absolutely nothing to do with something that one is able to choose. Human sexuality is not a choice, nor is it a lifestyle. It is a core part of the identity of each of us, and discrimination based on sexual orientation should not be condoned any more than discrimination based on race, ethnicity or gender. The easiest way for me to show you what I mean is this: ask yourself this question "when did you think about it and then choose not to be gay".

I hope that anyone who reads that doesn't take it to be insulting! That wasn't my intention, but I'm sure everyone knows that. I have never been told that before. What I meant about the word choice is not a bad thing. Maybe choice was the wrong word to use.
I lived with my husband for 3 years before I married him! To some people that is totally unacceptable! They think we will burn in hell for that. But that was our choice! See my point.
It just really bothers me that people can be so cruel. My Mom always said to me when I was young," You would make a great President someday honey, but they would shoot you within 5 minutes of your speech". Will the people on this earth ever stop judgeing? I doubt it! And it's a shame! But then I guess they are the one's that are miserable!

Happy Holidays Bethann

Hi Bethann,
I am sure no one here is insulted by anything you have said. You have always made a point to be a kind, open,as well as interesting person with your posts. You seem like a good person, who cares about the well being of others. Who could ask for a nicer club member? The sting from the anti gay tactics used in the last election are still "just below the surface" for me and many others. The ugly picture that was posted at my work place just brought the sting right back to the top. We have an annual "pot luck" carry in holiday lunchen every year, and also a company Christmas party.I always attend and was signed up for both.I cancelled both this morning. The reason I did that is because no apology was given, and no memo about what is and what is not acceptable to post was handed out. In other words to "them" it is not a big deal. When they asked me why I had cancelled on both events I told them this: "Why don't you ask Gary"? (the sales manager)
I can spend my free time with my family and friends. I don't need to "hang" with the bigots.
I needed to vent about this, and this thread was a perfect place for that venting.I feel much better. Thanks for being there for me Bethann, and everyone else too!
Happy Holidays!!
Rick

Hi Bethann, no I absolutely agree with Rick, I'm am also sure no one here was insulted by anything you said, I probably went about that the wrong way. I just wanted to point that the word "choice" has been used against us in the past and I thought it would be a good time to set the record straight, (pardon the pun) :)

What the world needs now

Burt Bacharach said it best when he wrote:

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No not just for some but for everyone

Lord, we don't need another mountain,
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross,
Enough to last till the end of time

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some but for everyone.

Lord, we don't need another meadow
There are cornfields and wheat fields enough to grow
There are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine
Oh listen, Lord, if you want to know

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love,
No, not just for some but for everyone

No, not just for some, oh, but just for everyone

Hi Rick

Happy Holidays to you as well!
You know I think it is a shame that your not going to your parties! Don't let those Butt-heads get to you! Maybe I need to come up there and have a little talk with Gary! Sound like your company needs to send him to Employee management classes!
My husband is playing up there at a place called Pierre"s in Jan., I normally don't go, but if your up to it I would love for you to come and meet me for a cocktail.

Hi All,
I'm just tapping in here for the moment. I'm a friend of Rick's & fellow co-worker. Rick is a great guy and he's correct in his assesment with these idiots (some are, not all who work here) who seem to think hate language and bigotry is funny. They really are completely ignorant, having to deal with the same as he does everyday. My husband and I both moved from a very progressive town, Austin TX, to here and man, what a culture shock! I should have done my research better! But the gift we did get is new friends such as Rick and a couple of others. I didn't know he changed his mind on the parties but think he should change it back. He doesn't have to hang with those idiots, he can hang with us!
P.S. love this website!
