We've discussed this machine before but I don't recall if anyone has one. I'd sure love to see what the inside of this machine looks like. I'd like to see this big spasher wheel that is supposed to was the dishes.

Are those knobs for choosing cycles? I have never seen a dishwasher with miscl. selector knobs.
The racks look rather cramped. Why is there a big hump in the bottom rack?

Another venerable brand gone with the wind
I remember seeing people win these on "Let's Make a Deal" but I never saw one anywhere here in the NY Metro area. Does anyone have one?

I remember a friend of the family had one very simular. I don't remember what was under the hump in the middle. I wish I could see the specs more clearly. Anyone got any out their?

Under the hump in the bottom rack was a black plastic drum that ran from front to back. It operated on the same principle as a tire that moves over wet pavement picks up and throws water. Maybe tread was needed. The drum rotated clockwise to "wash" the load on the right hand side of the machine and counter-clockwise to "wash" the dishes on the left. It had two detergent dispensers, little containers at the front of the lower rack so that detergent was dispensed for both "washes." Neither was covered because the water washing one side did not wet anything on the other side.
I remember our excitement when John or Jeff found one of these on a curb side special and brought it home. We all gathered after dinner to watch it. They brought down dinner plates with fresh food on them. We loaded it and noticed that it was indeed whisper quiet. At the end of the two washes and two rinses, it had failed to remove or even move the small amount of smashed potato on the dinner plates. After running it a couple of additional times to see if it would wash anything and running it with the door open to see how it could do such a horrible job with time, detergent and hot water, I think Jeff took pictures for posterity and it was sent to the recycler. It might have worked if you washed the dishes before loading them. I believe it was the most disappointing appliance we tested, right down there with the Philco Automagic with the perforated tub. Que lastima!

Our neighbors had a Tappen
In the early 70s but it was the one with the reversing spray arms. I think there was an arm in the bottom and below the top rack but I know it didn't have the hump. I think it had a large Timer dial like the one in this picture.

I still love the look of the controls.

Your neighbors probably had the Tappan Reverse-A-Jet which actually had a spring that wound tight while the wash arm was turning in the direction that the water jets pushed it then suddenly the spring had all it could take and spun the wash arm around in the opposite direction. From that first dishwasher of theirs, the Tappan people were convinced that reversing action was best for cleaning dishes. I wonder what that sounded like with an uninsulated tank.

And the small dial had selections for R&H China/Crystal P&P Normal Wash and Sani Cycle. On the dial was a marking for start and short wash. And I think it was a pull to start plus the dial lit up when operating. I remember the exterior more than the interior. To open you lifted the lever under the controls. It was a quiet machine for that time.
I knew nothing about the reversa jet but I know after that they went to D&M.

I think they went to everyone over time....I believe I've seen a either a GE or Whirlpool mfd Tappan from the late 70s (WCI didn't buy Tappan until 1983 or so)
When we moved into our new house in September, 1961, the O'Keefe & Merrit version of this was in the kitchen, albeit with only the big knob (builder model). It was pulled out and moved to our old house and the Waste King was put in its place. My Godfather's family moved into a house in 1963 that had the same new dishwasher. They had it until the early to mid 1970s, replaced witha TOL Hotpoint. Poor people, they never had a decent dishwasher lol. Anyway, I got to load and run theirs numerous times. Didn't really hold a lot and like Tom said, piss poor at cleaning.
