Dumb question on the Filter-Flo series:

When using the mini-basket, how did the washer know when the mini-basket was full? I'm assuming they used the typical pressure switch type for the main tub, but how did the washer sense when the mini-basket was full? Timed fill?

Just curious.....

The mini basket has a few small holes in the bottom and holes at the top rim. The washer fills the main tub with a small amount of water and when agitation starts and the pump moves water up into the filter flo pan, that water filters down into the mini basket gradually filling it. The mini basket overflows and the water recirculates down into the main basket to start its journey over again. When the machine spins, the mini basket water exits through the top holes, like a solid tub machine.

And, in practice, a good deal of the water drained out of the Mini-Basket during the pause between agitate and drain, at least in the case of the first one which was very small. We used to use it for mom's nylons.

Mini Basket

We had 2 GE FF machines when I was growing up. One from the early-mid 70s and the second from the late 70s or very early 80s. (If you check out my album on here, the pic with the cat lounging on top of the laundry, that would be the machine we had in the early 80s.) ANYWAY...yes, the mini-basket setting was a lower water level than the smallest small load setting, and the Filter Flo recirculation supplied water to the mini basket, through the filter. With the holes in the bottom of the MB, it didn't really dawn on me that most of the water drainage/extraction would be up-and-out, same as a solid drum overflow machine, but it makes sense. After all, that's how the fabric softener dispenser worked, which I always thought was very clever: The first spin forced the softener up out of the inner chamber, into an outer chamber with holes in the bottom; when the spin ended, the softener emptied into the filter pan and was flushed into the rinse water by the FF recirc.
