For one year, 1958, and one year only, Frigidaire used Fabric Master on their dryers. The next year their deluxe dryers featured Auto Dry but were not called "Fabric Master" as far as I can remember. After this time, Kenmore started calling their auto dry cycle Fabric Master. I don't remember if that was the name for only the auto dry cycle of the dryers that had it or the name of the models with it, but it's interesting how the term was used between the two brands.

Interesting!

The '59 still had the Fabric Master name on the panel but yep, the automatic drying cycles on the dryer control dial simply said 'automatic drying'.

Sigh... that '59 Imperial of mine has to have one of the best 'auto' dry cycles I've ever used, but it is alas out of service due to a drum bearing failure. Still desparately seeking one...

.
Do bearings not come in somewhat standard sizes? Why tool up for a custom sized bearing, why not standardize like tires on a car. Take the Ford EXP...ah, on second thought...

Paul is there a number stamped on the drum bearing? I would think it would be standard bearing like most other Frigidaire bearings. I had that dryer for long time and I loved it, soft clothes and very accurate auto-dry. It originally came from the appliance recycler that was watching out for me for a while for old machines.

What is the model number of your '59?

1959 DRUM SHAFT BEARING Numbers

#5436520
DD-59, DCD-59, Dl-59,

#5430745 Ball
DCI-59

Bud, mine's the DI59

I have that part number memorized...LOL

It got updated to 530 5436250 at some point but when I google it I keep coming with the phone number of some kind of a lab run by a Mr. Heisenberg...  LOL

Still searching, trust me..

Paul - I have a feeling you could cross reference the bearing to an over the counter bearing today. Just as long as the sizing is standard you should be good to go. I had replaced the bearing in a ‘55 Filtrator with one from Grainger.

If you cannot find a bearing, you can always use the procedure that John used on my DI56. While I held the vacuum cleaner hose with the crevice tool against the bearing housing, John drilled into the bearing housing and the vacuum sucked the metal particles away. Once the drill bit got to the shaft, he stopped drilling and I continued with the vacuum hose for another few seconds. Then we applied turbine oil to the bearing through the hole and it worked. John can probably tell you what we did to seal up the hole because I don't remember.

Looking at the back of the drum pulley on my machine ....

it looks like a big fat bushing held in place by the horizontal cross brace. Either you or I will have to take ours apart to inspect it more closely and see what actually is behind the drum. But on first glance it looks to be a large bushing. Do you have the time to pull the pulley off of yours and remove the bushing/bearing? If so I'm sure we can figure out a replacement for it. I have a source for ball bearings that have every size imaginable, just a simple matter of measuring it and finding a cross reference. If it is a bushing, that is not a hard one to tackle as well.

Hi Bud, Here's a link to the thread I put up when the bearing went bad on me. I've only got one picture of the bearing; but I can remove it when I am back at the house in Ogden on the weekend if that will help!
