POD 12/1: Copper KitchenAid Dishwasher

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I gave up on our Pro 610

After the second repair. Done by me, KitchenAid's response was that I shouldn't be making bread dough.

(Insert my usual comment about Whirlpool which gets the Imperial Queens so upset they pester poor Robert about how wicked I am).

All four of our pre-Whirpool trash days work perfectly. Oh, sure - every 20 years or so they need a capacitor or something minor.

It is a great pity - Whirlpool has introduced some of the most beautiful colors and the minis are just gorgeous. But, trash. Pure trash.

Like the Copper KA mixer!!But not the price!!!Is the case made from REAL copper?Like my present Viking/Kenwood Major Mixer-that thing is a Roto Tiller in a bowel!!!You could swear it could crush rocks or mix concrete! It has a 10A motor,7 Qt container.

Shouldn't be making bread dough? But doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose of even having a high end mixer?

Oh, wait...I forgot to read the memo... In today's America, high end mixers are intended to sit on counters of $50K kitchens to impress all the neighbors.

It is permitted to use the mixer a few times a year to "bake" as long as one is baking an all-American box of cake mix...

Yeah, John -

And there's whole threads of people complaining about that up and down Amazon and other sites who sell the dratted things.

Best I can tell, Whirlpool took one look at the cost of making these things the way Hobart used to and said: We'll keep the outside quality but lower the insides to Walmart Bargain-Bin $7.00 mixer levels.

That'll get the customer through the cake mixes. Nobody actually bakes anymore, anyway.

I was appalled by the loose components on the PC-Board (vibration, anyone?). I was disgusted by the PLASTIQUE transmission cover (and we're not taking  PA6/30, I doubt it was ABS) which is an INTEGRAL part of the POWERTRAIN. When I saw the cheap-ass cast metal gears, with their razor-sharp edges chewing into the nylon gear (a nylon gear which has never once failed on ANY of our Hobart made KA mixers), I wasn't surprised.

Then we have the lithium soap, straight from WWII which is pretending to be a grease. Impregnated with chewed up pieces of gear.

Whirlpool has lost me as a customer for their high-end appliances for life. If I'm going to spend that sort of money or recommend something at that price point to a friend, then it's going to be a product which isn't going to fall apart on them the first time they make a tea-cake.

This is what a REAL standmixer for home use looks like on today's market. Just buy one, once and you've replaced the three (or, on sale) four pieces of Whirlpool trash for yourself, your kids, their kids and the next generation of 'vintage' appliance fans.

Panthera, thanks :)

I had no idea Whirlpool did that to those mixers. Its a shame really. :( I was planning on buying one for home use, but now that I know that I will be buying something else. But I should not be all that surprised considering that many name brand reputable consumer goods are becoming must have bling-bling. Gorguous outside, throw away inside. Enough to last through a year of bragging till the next latest and greatest comes out. I remember a time when things like Coach hand bags lasted forever ;)

Instead of paying $2500 for the Hobart bench mixer as new-Look for a used one at a restaurant supply place-they do turn up.Those Hobart machines are staples in most bake shops.Older KA mixers made by Hobart are good buys as well-often they turn up as used. They would be worth fixing up-change the grease in the transmission.

Copper KitchenAid

I have not seen a brushed copper (satin) finished mixer like the one picture. I have seen the copper of the Metallic series. It has a lacquer finish to keep the copper from tarnishing. Table salt crystal pit the lacquer and cause spots of tarnish to appear. Not something I want to have happen to me. I have polished chrome model and very pleased. I also like the brushed nickel model and have seen Martha Stewart and Paula Deen using on on their programs.
