Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Oddly enough, my Whirlpool has the same style of lint filter on it, surprisingly filtered out quite a bit of lint. As much as I like my Maytags, the lint filter would work regardless of where the water level was on my Whirlpool. Hopefully it’ll be back in commission this summer, but is going to be modified and outfitted with a later style of console.

Along those lines

I've always wondered why Whirlpool never featured those wonderful dry detergent dispensers on their TOL models.

The best thing about the Lady Kenmores IMO was that they were one of the only machines of that era where you could have a cycle with both a Pre-Wash and a second rinse and not have to come back to the machine to add anything.

Kenmore models had features that WP models didn't via an agreement so KM could always be touted as better or "America's Best."

Some features were similar.  KM had (automatic) Soft Heat on dryers.  WP had (selectable) Super and Gentle drying speeds, which affected airflow rate and heat input rate.  WP had multiple dryer tumble speeds for five-ish years, ending after 1977, which KM never had that feature.

WP (and KA) washers couldn't have dual-action agitators until the agreement for that expired 5-ish years after direct-drive was introduced.

IIRC Sears moved more "Whirlpool" laundry appliances than they ever could themselves. That basically was end of story....

By time of Sears filing bankruptcy WP sales were only about two percent of that company's business. It wasn't always that way however. Late as 1970's into 1980's or so one in three American homes had Sears/Kenmore brand major appliances.

Think about it; from Maine to California Sears via its catalog/mail order and physical retail stores had a vast distribution network that few others could rival. Thrown in Sears "easy payment" plans and credit card things only got better.

If one were disciplined enough those interest free if paid within "X" month offers were a great way to handle major appliance purchases.

I think it's cool to see Whirlpool washers with separate wash and rinse temperatures as well as the speed controls and even the dryers having the speed controls, too...

Glad at least the separate speed controls got put back at least on the washers, though direct-drive, decades later...
