Seems strange, by today's standards, seeing a picture of a machine that was so very heavy in weight and was built with so much metal that was chromed. Those machines were built like TANKS! They did work quite well and there were more Kenmore washers and dryers in homes than any other machines at that time. These days and the recent past were all machines made mostly of plastic, particularly the console and timer area. Have to be very careful moving or taking them apart for service. The plastic is quite easy to break. The direct drive machines were very flimsy in comparison to the old belt drive machines and the new models even more so. I find it amazing that the direct drive machines were so long lasting and fairly durable. They are certainly easier to work on than the belt drive machines too.

LOL You youngins! I saw and worked on so many of those back in the day that I guess I fail to appreciate them as I should now. They really were EVERYWHERE! Never really thought about them being scarce later on.

Something we agree on, Steve: Timed bleach dispensers are a great feature. Gives the detergent time to do its job before the bleach is released. Kenmores dispensed it during the last 4 minutes of the wash. These Lady Kenmores were very quiet, too. It certainly has a beautiful console with all those colored pushbuttons--- and a garage door to hide it if you wanted to go for a very sleek look.

Like Bruce, I took Kenmores for granted because it seemed they were in every other house in our town. Plus, I had a severe case of Frigidaire envy. Now I appreciate how feature-laden our 1960 Model 80 really was.
