I know my mom bought Salvo a few times. But I remember her using vim more. Neighbor used salvo in the LK combo. I still have the laundry basket that looks like that. Bought in 1959 or 1960.

Mom tried 'the bisquit' but went back to All.
Salvo, my favorite smelling detergent of all time and the one I miss the most. I liked All too, back in the day. Wished there were more low sudsing detergents out there. But detergents changed because washers (and society) have changed and there's no going back.
Which begs the question to everyone: If you could choose one vintage detergent to use as your daily driver from the past, which one would you choose?
I'm just curious.

For me it would be the mid 60's thru early 70's version of Oxydol. Reminds me of playing outside as a kid and smelling that freshly washed laundry as Mom hung it out to dry.

I think mine would be All with Bleach, Borax, & Brighteners. Back in the day, detergents were so strong, I'd walk down the aisle and start itching and sometimes my eyes would sting. And All didn't have that effect on me.
Does anybody remember the smell of original Surf? It came in a blue box. I remembered that it smelled good, very distinctive, but cannot describe it. I'm hoping someone could refresh my memory with that one.

I always have preferred a liquid. Very oily skin so ALWAYS with 'ring-around-the-collar', especially on my dress shirts. With the liquid product(s), I could apply it directly to the collars as they went into the wash.

My mother used old powdered Tide for everything. I always liked the old liquid Wisk the best.
Barry, not a problem as far as I'm concerned. It was cold enough this morning for me to have Malto-Meal. I've been in sweats since I got up this morning. Have had thunderstorms since shortly before 5:00 this afternoon. It's supposed to be in the 80s by Tuesday.
My mother switched between Surf in the blue box and the original Tide. Both had very pleasing smells right after the wash and hanging outside to dry. I think Surf had the more pleasing scent. I just had a memory from long ago. In the hallway near the bedrooms we had a linen closet that stored all the sheets, towels and table cloths and napkins. It went floor to ceiling. I would open the door and stand almost into the closet and just inhale. It was such a wonderful clean fresh smell of linens line dried outdoors.

Oxydol would be my choice. Any of you hear about American Family detergent? Mom used that too and it was a good product.
Gary, I've never heard of American Family brand. I'm assuming it's no longer made. I've never seen it at all.
American Family was a Chicago-based soap company that P&G bought out in the 30s, I'd guess. It was a "premium" brand, in that each box/bar/… had a coupon which could be exchanged for a gift at the American Family store--there were several throughout Chicagoland. They stopped supporting the coupons in about 1970; at which time they discontinued the brand. My grandmother had a box of their soapflakes in her stash all the time I paid attention. Think White King of the prairies...
