This is the 1959 TOL Norge washer and dryer. Since I began picking up and working on washers and dryers from 1970 on, I have NEVER run across a washing machine like this one. I have run across, picked up and worked on many solid tub Norge machines, but not this one or even the forerunner in 1958. I have had and worked on the dryer pictured here and on many many Norge dryers of that vintage. There were many of the dryers still around and running. Obviously the washers did not last terribly long or there would have been more of them still around. I know they had various service problems, one being the pump. It certainly gave Norge a bad reputation from the 50's that seemed to carry through to the 60's & 70's. It is a shame they didn't have a little better design since they washed clothes so well. Consumer reports gave them a bigger boost than a massive advertising campaign would have done.

Did the user have any control over the machine after it was loaded with products?
If you chose a small load with a black sweater would you still get a large dose of detergent and bleach?
Did different cycles only dispense bleach?

I always thought it strange that the solid tub machines had a smaller than most capacity and the new models had a larger than anyone else capacity for quite a while.

Norge washer lid

My aunt had a MOL solid tub Norge back in the early 60's and the back-opening lid did not open all the way. It stopped at about the one o'clock position and held there. It did not make sense to me at the time as to why it was designed that way.

Seeing this machine in the ad, I realize the partial-opening lid design and mechanism may have been to accommodate the dispensomat angling out on the control panel. Maybe they used it in all Norge models, even if the machines did not have the dispensing system.
