Beautiful machine that I remember Granny having in her kitchen on The Beverly Hillbillies. Maytags always cost a bit more than other brands with their reputation being built on long-lasting dependability. This machine would cost you about $3500 today.
Although many Maytags ran many years without a hitch, I recall our neighbor had a late 50's model that was serviced quite a few times before she got rid of it after about six years. The straw that broke the camel's back was when it over-filled and flooded her kitchen. So there is always an exception to the rule.
Most folks would not spend $3500 for a washing machine today, and one could get into the debate about longevity vs. performance. Is it more important to get superior performance for 10 years, or average to mediocre performance for 20 years? Ideally both.
Maytags of that era provided average washing performance with a small capacity, but on the whole were dependable and relatively easy to service. Today, the Speed Queen front loader has a reputation for long-lasting dependability, but lacking a water heater, I would guess its performance is probably average at best.
