I've always wondered what kind of mechanism this washer used to create the agitation.  How does it do it without gears?  Is it like a rollermatic or something else?  I've never seen one of these in person to be able to investigate.

just a shaft

I think those just have a pulley driven shaft with the free-spinning agitator offset and at an angle for a orbital agitator motion :)Very cool pair in the POD :)

Were Kelvinator washers any better than any other washer? Did that shampoo action clean any better than a normal wash?

I have used one and yes

They really do wash and rinse better, the spin is ok, not like a Frigidaire, but overall the ABC/Kelvinator is really something else.

Greg had one of these at his June 2005 wash-in.  I had not been around these much.  I had the lid somewhat opened/closed during the overflow rinse.  But then when it paused during the rinse for the static overflow, I put the lid fully opened.  Did I get a shock (and soaked) when  it started back up and flung all that water all over me.

I used an early '60's TOL machine as a daily-driver for a few months. It performed very well for me. I did not expect it to clean as well as it did. Of course, dosed with phosphated Viva it was a lot of fun!
