I can tell you from seeing these machines that Orange was better as an accent color.  A whole row of them under bright fluorescent lighting was jarring and vaguely disturbing.

 

What's "procelain"?

 

I do not remember ever remember seeing the SQ large capacity front loaders. Generally a Milnor or Troy Big Boy was put in the store.

 

I liked the SQ noises, especially the sound of the last of the overflow rinse water splashing into the outer tub after the water shut off during the agitation before the spin--drain. I did not understand why the domestic machines did not rank better in the testing magazines.

For washing machines and other appliances porcelain enamel was used for tubs due to it being quite strong and durable.

Porcelian is still widely used for bath tubs and sinks, another original application. Think of all those heavy cast iron enameled vintage and even modern pieces.

As it relates to us on this forum enameled iron or metal containers were long used for inner and or outer tubs in washing machines, then for tumble dryer drums. Gradually fiberglass, plastics and stainless steel however replaced enameled coatings.
 
I attended a week-long summer music seminar at a technical college near Shell Lake, WI around 1990 or so. There was a laundromat with a boatload of these Speed Queens in various colors. Visually, it was wild. Unfortunately, the place was filthy and generally uncared for. At least 10 washers had out-of-order signs on them and most were in bad physical condition. I picked the least creepy-looking machine and washed a load.

Always thought it was odd to have an "Off" position, but I suppose it was the only way to halt a cabinet-slamming out-of-balance load when the lid was locked. It's also cheating a bit to hype the Durable Press feature when no Brisk/Slow agitate/spin speed combination is available.

Anyway, I still remember the place thirty years later, so it must have made an impression, lol.
 
I worked for a guy who had a bunch of these SQs

In his Laundromat back in the 70's in Farmington MN.  He always claimed that they were the best Commercial TL you could buy.  He much preferred them over MT or WP.  His favorite features were the solid SS tub and the fluid drive.  A few years ago after I bought my SQ FL he gave me an NOS pump for those machines that he still had around.  He knew I belonged to this site and figured someone here could use it.

Eugene, had these washers  the laundry room of the apartment complex I lived in 1976-1977 Academic year.  There may have been gentle or brisk agitation, but all spin speeds were fast.
