These Days...
...If it's an air-conditioner, it's almost certainly an LG. I've seen them under the GE, Maytag, Fedders and Hampton Bay brands.
It's a crappy design. For starters, there is no longer any provision to bring in outside air. If snything smoky or stinky happens in your house, the A/C unit is not going to help.
Their filters are a special, proprietary plastic-framed design that slides into a special slot in the front of the unit. That means that a replacement filter has to come from the manufacturer, not from a roll of filter material bought cheaply from the hardware store.
There is no oiling provision on their motors.
The worst of it comes from the design of their cooling slots, some of which are on TOP of the machine's exterior, right where they're absolutely certain to suck in falling leaves and twigs. I've spent many an hour taking an LG-designed unit out of the window, disassembling it enough to get noise-making debris out of it, then reassembling and reinstalling. I once had the fun of doing this, only to have another big, noise-producing leaf drop into the unit's innards through the cooling slots not half-an-hour later. All I can say about that incident is that I am certain Robert would not permit me to reproduce the language I used on that occasion here.
Bah. Und humbug.
