What makes up the innards of a Zenith washer? Was it like a Speed Queen; Hotpoint; Wizard; Other? I'm guessing its engineering was based on one of the major manufacturers of the day...

Does anyone in our community own one? And is this the same Zenith that produced televisions?

Dont know about then, but "today" I bought a cheap "Zenith" A/C. If I had known it's actually an LG I would not have have touched it.

...and by cheap I don't mean "inxpensive" I mean the proper meaning of the word, being "poor quality."

It's a JET in it's noise-level.

LG has owned Zenith for nearly 10 years now. Even at that, I wasn't aware of the ACs. I remember seeing Airtemp ACs up through about 10 years ago...no telling whose they were.

The POD's logo is highly suggestive of Zenith's trademarked "Z" logo without really duplicating it. The lightning Z was never depicted horizontally like that. I've read many things about the Zenith company and I don't remember anything about appliances. The only thing that makes me pause about this is that the badge shown on the front corner in the picture is somewhat familiar as a Zenith often used "Royal" as a model designation and had a crest like that one.

You might try seeking out a page of big Zenith radio fans that might know more.

Togs we have a similar window a/c labelled "hampton bay", from the depot a couple of years back. Nice to have around if the central system has a breakdown. This summer we have used it at night in the bedroom and turned the central up to 78. we are not overly "green" people, except when its "our-green". June has been unbearably hot here, i thought we might economize.

The Zenith in the POD was an Apex-built top loader. It had a fiberglass tub but was an oscillating agitator machine instead of the Bouncing Basket. They were also made for Montgomery Wards and Universal as well, maybe more?

Did Wards ever have a Bouncing Basket? Universal?

Apex had some very cool styling and that Fiberglass tub and balance system is just incredible. One of the most stable spinning washers I've every seen.

Bouncing basket Wards

A friend of mine from upstate N.Y. said his mother bought a Wards automatic after the second world war,,he could not remember exactly when, but he said it was a bouncing basket , she was not to enthused over it and a new Frigidaire replaced it in 55, sorry I can't tell you more .

These Days...

...If it's an air-conditioner, it's almost certainly an LG. I've seen them under the GE, Maytag, Fedders and Hampton Bay brands.

It's a crappy design. For starters, there is no longer any provision to bring in outside air. If snything smoky or stinky happens in your house, the A/C unit is not going to help.

Their filters are a special, proprietary plastic-framed design that slides into a special slot in the front of the unit. That means that a replacement filter has to come from the manufacturer, not from a roll of filter material bought cheaply from the hardware store.

There is no oiling provision on their motors.

The worst of it comes from the design of their cooling slots, some of which are on TOP of the machine's exterior, right where they're absolutely certain to suck in falling leaves and twigs. I've spent many an hour taking an LG-designed unit out of the window, disassembling it enough to get noise-making debris out of it, then reassembling and reinstalling. I once had the fun of doing this, only to have another big, noise-producing leaf drop into the unit's innards through the cooling slots not half-an-hour later. All I can say about that incident is that I am certain Robert would not permit me to reproduce the language I used on that occasion here.

Bah. Und humbug.

Airtemp became part of Fedders

Airtemp started as Chrysler's refrigeration and heating division after Walter P. Chrysler's engineers designed the air conditioning system for the Chrysler building. Apparently it was the 1st fully air conditioned skyscraper.

Chrysler sold Airtemp to Fedders in 1976 and used the name on some of their units ever since. "Airtemp" badged Fedders units (made in China) were still being sold recently. The logo font was still the same one used by Chrysler since the '60's (without the Chrysler Pentastar of course.)

Did Wards ever have a Bouncing Basket? Universal?

Yes and Yes. The Universal all in one washer/dryer molded into one 55" wide cabinet was a bouncing basket. All made by Apex of course. The Universal Bouncing Basket was made almost as long as the Apex.
