Seems incredible to have ever been able to get a heavy built, high quality pair of machines that do everything you might want to do for less than $400. That is one of the biggest reasons Kenmore became the most popular brand around. Good washers that lasted quite a while and the absolutely best dryers ever built. Hard to believe that they ever existed, considering what we have to choose from these days....

that was a big thing available back then, you had a variety of choices from a low budget model up to a high end machine with many options....

now your selection is down to a few models with a high price tag, not everyone can afford......

even if you got the BOL model, it was still a heavy duty base and mechanism, no matter how many speeds or options you got.....

Is the primary difference between a Roto-Swirl and Super Roto-Swirl agitator the vertical ribs that run down to the edge of the skirt? (Thanks to Chris Pfifer for the photo)

We do have to remember that $400 back in the day was quite a chunk of change compared to $400 today. Kenmore did have many sale prices that made them competitive as well as their easy-to-get credit. Having said that, I do recall feeling duped when companies began asking as much for the dryer as they did for the washer. First noticed this when I bought the 2010 Frigidaire front-loaders. Same with the Maytag 8100's. Over $1,000 for a freakin' dryer?!

The barrel of the Super was more narrow than the original and has ribs.

What a great deal for the money.Great machines. One would only have to bump up a model and get an automatic bleach dispenser.

I always thought the fabric softener dispenser was kind of useless on washers that do a spray-rinse in the final spin. Why bother?
